School Days in my opinion is a hidden gem. This anime successfully "control" viewers' emotions. Happiness, anger, sorrow, sympathy, satisfaction, etc., viewers can feel them all just from 12 episodes.

Music / sound effects:
The music and sound effects are pretty decent. "School Days" has 1 opening song which is very suitable for the show and 8 ending songs which change when big events happen in the anime. With this method, The emotion that the show wants viewers to experience can be conveyed even stronger and more memorable. Hence although people can not remember the opening and the endings, they can still recall the feelings they have when watching the show.
Art / Animation:
In 2007, the animation from School Days is considered pretty alright. It is not aged well, but acceptable.
The characters:
Makoto Itou:
My first impression of him was that he was very kind, friendly, and capable. After episodes 1 and 2, that impression changed significantly. His sexual desire and eroticism were shown very clearly. He started to show his pathetic, unfaithful side. His good personality started to be corrupted by his uncontrolled sexual urge toward other female characters. As a consequence of those behaviors, he had to take serious consequences.
He started of as a decent character and ended up as a scumbag whom everyone hates. Hence although he is undesired, selfish, and a complete loser, there is no doubt that he is, to all intents and purposes, a very well-written character.
Kotonoha Katsura:
She was a shy and easy-to-bully girl. She could not stand up for herself at first. She was kind, friendly and tried very hard for her lover - Makoto. After knowing that he was unfaithful to her, she still believed that he was her partner, and still love her. After all the sadness and pain of being betrayed by someone who she loved and cared about so much, under the circumstances, she was heartbroken, mind shattered, and depressed. Her development was magnificent, from a girl who could not defend and protect herself from bullies to a girl who did everything for her love. This character earned my sympathy, love, and respect.
Sekai Saionji:
I just need one word to describe her: "pathetic". She was Makoto's friend and the person who helped him and Kotonoha got together, although she also had a strong feelings for him. After knowing that her feelings for him were too immense, she started to steal him from Kotonoha. She maneuvered him into cheating on his current girlfriend, which was dirty, and pitiful.
As a result of all pity and disgusting moves she made, viewers were pleased to learn that she was cheated on by Makoto and that she felt the same feelings just like Kotonoha, which she caused.
The satisfaction that I had was massive when she tasted her own medicine.
The plot:
it was perfect in its way. The characters' development was convincing, and the story was interesting enough to watch through 12 episodes. I understand that people hate this show. But by that reason, this show achieved something that not every anime can achieve, viewers' emotions and feelings. The characters and the story were intentionally made that way to make viewers furious, angry, annoyed, and displeased. After that hell, School Days showed people one of the most satisfying and pleasing endings in the anime industry.
If you hate this show, that means School Days achieves what it is made for. People probably think this show is hot trash, a pile of crap, I think so too. But we can not deny that the ending is very pleasing. It was written that way, on purpose.
I just want to clarify and solve the misunderstanding that a lot of people have about School Days. People hate it, and that is why it is good.
