IDK WHO'S GOING TO TAKE THEIR TIME TO READ THIS LOL
I would rate death note on a higher scale comparative to the other animes that I've watched, because somehow I completed it in just 3 days for someone who cannot commit to watch or read anything completely. What kept me going was the plot and how interesting it was.
But let's cut to the chase, though the plot was good and the moral that was conveyed was necessary, it was rigged in a way that favoured Near and L.
Even if let's say that I wasn't going to think of Light as my favourite character, I'd still be frustrated about how the plot had some minor cracks here and there. Sure, I did assume his downfall was inevitable due to the way he operated, but I wasn't satisfied with how the investigations were carried on led to them having a tunnel vision that HE WAS KIRA from the beginning.
I am going to note down the points where it shows how rigged it was, plus imma point out some mistakes here and there. I might not have a thorough understanding of the plot, and I might make some mistakes, but bear with me as i list down the places where I've noticed that it didn't make sense and was a bit unfair, as if everything and anything happened just magically seemed to point it out that Light was Kira.
1) Okay, so remember how L narrowed down the options deducing that Kira could be a highschooler and just turned the investigation to that path? Yeah, the timings where Kira kill did match the schedule of a school student, but if you see, in various other jobs they share the same office schedule as school ones if you view it in a broader category. I mean, I wasn't going to object if they just made it as an assumption but they steered towards that path wholly just like that. They also got to consider unemployed people/ employed people who might be rich and just hired maids to do the household chores and other options as well. Also since they know that they're dealing with supernatural stuff, they got to consider various other options as well.
2) Again when L narrowed down the options thinking that Kira could have connections with the police who were working with him, I am not saying it's wrong at all. And through this, he could also think of Light as a suspect, but it stops there. Again here, they are dealing with supernatural stuff so anything could be expected. Or they should consider how a rich person who could supposedly be Kira, could've bribed the officers/threatened to kill them to get to know about the investigations. Sure he was thinking in a logically way, but instead of narrowing down the options, he should have used trial or error method somewhere as a right human brained detective.
3) When surveillance cameras were set in his room, he seemed to have passed without raising suspicion. So instead of focusing on Light as their sole and main suspect, L should have moved on. It feels rigged how he just focuses on him stubbornly without any sort of evidence.
4) Okay so I forgot Raye Penber's fiance's name, so lets call her M. So, M, I admit she's sharp, but how can she just miraculously come to the conclusion that Kira can make others die not only of heart attacks, but other issues as well? I mean, yes she had a valid reason, but again as much I need the investigators to make assumptions, I DON'T WANT THEM TO STICK TO IT WITH CONFIDENCE BEFORE PROOF. Okay, M cracked through it. But how was she so sure that she had to report about it to the cops. Deaths are common, so are accidents...nothing seemed peculiar about the incidence of the criminal getting hit by a car as he hoped down the bus. Sure assumptions like this can be made, but how can they be so sure?
5) When Misa Amane was detained under suspicion of being second kira, how come the public didn't notice her disappearance. Yea well she is an orphan, but still she's a rising model, definitely someone must've noticed. By the looks of it, she sure seems to attract the attention of stalkers and all those shady people. How come no one noticed her absence and raise suspicion regarding this issue?
6) When Light allowed himself to get detained for 50 days (?), the deaths of criminals did continue. So instead of focusing on having them under surveillance, L could have moved on and conducted new investigations. At this point, I reached my limit and just thought of L to be someone who had the kind of personality to not admit when they're wrong. Yea he did get his hands on the right person, but again there was no proof. We know Light is the bad guy, but he doesn't. So from everyone's view, it just feels unfair.
7) Even after this they were handcuffed. Sure, he wanted to confirm but lets think realistically here. Imagine having to be handcuffed with someone who you barely know for weeks. UGH. Ok I think I'm taking fiction too seriously, but come on I can't help but point it out. Because L's way of investigation was off, and no one can deny me. No hate towards him of course, he's a good detective and all that, but it feels like he's too consumed with self-righteousness by the way he investigates.
8) Hah I'm tired of writing, but lets keep going lol. Ok so this was kinda rigged, but something that doesn't favour anyone exactly (maybe Light in a way, yes I cannot deny that.) Yeah so when L died, they should have known or deduced from it that it has something to do with Light because when he mentioned that he was going to test the death note, he was immediately met with his demise. I felt like this part was rushed, no proper investigation done despite an important gem of the team died so suddenly. And also, no one else was supposed to know Watari's identity and his face. And they didn't seem to suspect anything at all, but somehow they used their brains when not needed lol.
9) Ok, timeskip to years later...Near was introduced. But I'm sure he was barely 17-18 years old who grew in an orphanage without prior experience. However people have brilliant brains, I don't think they can take on a case that's been unsolved for 6 years and solve it like that. Now again this is fiction, and it can be justified on that basis so just ignore this point.
10) So when near had to find out who x-kira was without evidence at first, just to make an assumption, how did he trace back to Teru almost immediately. He should first lay out his options well, and investigate each one thoroughly. Just because Teru followed Kira's ideology, that couldn't prove that he could be in possession of the book. Also they had limited time, so this would just be considered A MASSIVE GAMBLE. Anyone related to Kiyomi could be like "LETS FOLLOW KIRA" and Near would have just assumed that they were x-kira.
I'm kind of tired of typing so I had to keep my points limited. These were enough for now i suppose, I might submit a second review.
Of course this doesn't mean that I didn't enjoy the anime or plot, of course its fiction and everything can be justified i suppose. And this isnt a hate review, trust me...because Death note is in top 5 list of anime for me LOL.
