This show has really helped me come to terms with myself. For as long as I can remember I've wanted to be someone special. I wanted to be rich, famous, and remembered. As I got older, the reality of the world became apparent. I was maybe, just slightly, ahead of the average person in some aspects (copium) but average in most things.

I'd feel stressed out and anxious about how my life would just be forgotten and that no matter what I do, I'd still be an average joe doing average things and living an average life. This show really helped me process and come to terms with that. I don't suffer from any health or mental issues, I'm good enough at academics, I'm not the most creative, I'm just fine athletically, and I don't have financial issues or a tough life considering where I live. So the fear of being average was my biggest concern.

Then I stumbled upon this show. I thought it would be another easy-going rom-com but I would be pleasantly surprised. Sorata is literally me! Not exactly but close enough. I instantly related to him and his struggles.

Sorata basically has an inferiority complex, although it is completely understandable when he is surrounded by generational talents 24/7. He struggles through the hardships of a normal person, being rejected over and over. He sees the talented breezing through everything and the only time he gets recognition and approval is when talented people help him. Not to mention, the reason they accepted him in the first place was so they could find out who the talented person helping him was.

The realisation guts him and leaves him feeling insecure. However, by the end of the show Sorata realises that he isn't alone in his struggles, he realises that even geniuses sacrifice something that normal people can't comprehend but most importantly, he learns that being average isn't bad as long as we try to improve ourselves to the best of our abilities. Once we've done that, the we gain peace of mind, knowing that after all we tried, this is as far as our talent takes us. We understand that talent is based on luck and we did the best we could with the hand we were dealt.

He also learns that an average life is great. Not saying that we should be content with our situation, but take a step back and notice all the little details. Realise that your life isn't that bad. Maybe you have kind friends and you have a good time playing with them. You can enjoy watching anime, eating good food, and being surrounded by people you love and who love you.

Personally, when I get passionate about watching football with my brother, I realise something as simple as having a good time with a person you care about is more satisfying than a billion fans and fuelling your ego. So take a step back, realise how fortunate your 'average' life is and then you can find peace with said fact.

All in all, I love the message. Appreciate and be grateful for the simple things, know that you aren't alone in wanting to be special and struggling through averageness but don't let it stop you from improving yourself to the best of your abilities. Remember that even geniuses sacrifice things to excel and that Mashiro is best girl.
