Gokushufudou or as the English title implies is a story that revolves around a house husband but with a twist. It had all the elements of a what could have been a great anime. A unique story, superb comedic timings, banger OP and ED and great voice acting. What it lacked behind is the fundamental aspect of what anime is all about, that is, animation. Let's talk about each aspect of the anime one by one starting from the great negative.
Animation
Animations is, to sum up in one word, horrendous. Frames are mostly still, characters are traced, badly animated with only their lips moving during conversation. I get they are trying to add manga like punch to the comedy but i think they simply forget why and what people watch anime for.
Character Designs
Character designs are good and there is really nothing much to talk about. Tatsu character design was already ahem hard boiled and Miku is really cute. Side character designs are fine as well.
Story
There is no deep or hidden story line. It's a straight up comedy slice of life about a past yakuza turned house husband and his wife. There are some interesting side characters which add interest to the lore but those episode are really far in between.
Comedy
Surprisingly anime was somewhat funny. First episode was good but once you focus on the animation, it get's difficult to pay attention to the rest of the show. If you can ignore the animation, you can actually find a few giggles in between.
Music
Op and Ed, like i already mentioned are banger. I straight up loved and laughed more during the Opening and ending then the actual first episode, remembering the funny moments of the same episode from the manga. Rest of the background music is fine and helps add power to the punchlines but you will, again, have to focus on the joke rather the animation.
Voice Acting
This is what actually saves the anime for me. I am so glad Kenjiro Tsuda reprises his role as tatsu from the promotional videos. He has done an amazing job giving the series whatever charm it has. Other voice actors also did a great job. if you will laugh, or enjoy the show, that would be only because of the tremendous efforts of the voice actors. Fabulous job, literally saved the series from being absolute demolished.
Overall
Adaptation is funny. Animations is terrible. You won't be missing anything if you don't watch it. Hate to be that guy but manga is definitely better.
Only person who should take responsibility for this adaptation is the producer for giving the terrible idea of adapting series as in manga. Rest of the staff, directors, animators did okay with what they could. Thanks for adapting this but don't do terrible experiments like this with popular series like The Way of The House Husband.
