This is my first review. I'm going to be 100% honest. Agree or disagree, I'm always open.
Demon Slayer: Mugen Train has just been released in America, which is where I live in. I was honestly excited to go watch it in a movie theater and not some... Pirated site where they only show the Japanese release (oh god... The camera.) Honestly though, It felt kind of weird to put one entire arc into a movie and I at first would like for it to be in the second season. But wow... I never fully experience hype and amazement by the extraordinary visuals in the fight scenes until I went to a movie theater to watch Mugen Train.
Story: 7/10
This movie takes place only in and through the Mugen Train arc, where it begins when Tanjiro and his crew bought tickets to go to the infinity train at the end of the first season. The plot of Demon Slayer as a whole is a different story. The Mugen Train arc involves around two battle events, that being the Demon Slayers vs Enmu, and Kyojuro Rengoku himself vs Akaza.
The Demon Slayers vs Enmu fight involves around sleeping and dreams. Enmu's first way of killing the Demon Slayers felt more refreshing than the other fights where it's just pure combat. Enmu assign four children to go inside every Demon Slayer's dream to get rid of their Spiritual Core which will "give them good dreams." I was intrigued by Enmu's plan on making the demon slayers fall asleep and assassinate them in their dreams. Tanjiro and Rengoku's dream are mainly about their past, while Zenitsu and Inosuke's dream mainly involves... Comedy.
Although I do laugh at both Zentisu and Inosuke's dream, it feels a little off as it takes away the seriousness of Enmu's plan to kill them through their dreams. I do admit, it was funny. But Zenitsu and Inosuke just easily their win over the opposing kids with only comedy itself. Comedy during serious events/battles a risky move to execute because it will make the battle progress with a joke or end with a joke, taking away the serious effort in a battle. But hey, the main focus of the movie is both Rengoku and Tanjiro, so I care less about Zenitsu and Inosuke.
The second half of the Enmu fight turns back to your typical demon slayer fight scene, where it is demons and demon slayers fight in combat with stunning animation. I was really entertained but that's only because of the animation itself, as the stunning visuals and detail gives a more greater impact and intensity in every fight of Demon Slayer. It turns at that the whole train itself is the entire body of Enmu, which actually has potential for great dangers and disadvantages for the demon slayers.
Although it was very cool when Tanjiro and Inosuke fight Enmu, the way Enmu fight felt honestly boring. All Enmu does in order to kill Tanjiro and Inosuke is by spamming his multiple eyes to continuously put them to sleep and cover himself from them entering further. The funny thing is, is that both Tanjiro and Inosuke counters the sleeping effect as Tanjiro commits suicide in his dreams and Insouke just looks away with his mask on. I wish Enmu can just use more than just spamming his eyes and covering himself. Overall, the Enmu fight was pretty interesting in the first half, but then turn more to a regular demon slayer fight.
The second fight however... Is the main goddamn meat for the movie... Rengoku vs Akaza. It's the main climax of the movie that will make you have a climax during and after the fight. The studio literally added more budget on the fight than the Enmu fight. The fight itself along with its stunning visuals and animation is the movie experience, especially if you watch it on theater. Seeing a huge screen as you see just an exaggerated ton of fire. The animation is the same, but combined with the fight itself feels so awesome to watch. Rengoku is a literally badass when he attempt to defeat Akaza with his Eleventh Form. The soundtrack, the animation, the fight scenes in Rengoku vs Akaza... Watch it in a theater and you'll feel way more amazed.
I was really pumped and hyped up while watching the fight. I was really amazed by the animation from a theater perspective. But then the end of the battle comes in and I was... A little sad. I didn't like the fact that Rengoku just dies after a sick fight and we only get to see his past and that's it. I feel like I want to see more of Rengoku in the story. Rengoku's death doesn't really satisfy me, as I think that him playing a much more better role than just pulling off a sick fight will make his death feel justifiable. The only reason i can understand for Rengoku's death being satisfied is his past.
Overall, the story of the Mugen Train Arc is just two battle events that takes place in the Infinity train. The first battle was great but turns more typical, and the second battle was amazing but Rengoku's death felt unsatisfied.
Animation: 10/10
Obviously this is demon slayer we're talking about. Very stunning visuals and great detail in animation. The intensity and the detail the animation offers to both fights felt really entertaining as like an eye candy. Demon Slayer's animation never gets old to me.
Soundtrack: 7/10
The soundtrack of Demon Slayer was enjoyable. It helps the intensity and impact of both battles and it does a very well job.
Characters: 5/10
Demon Slayer has a problem where the characters doesn't seem to have any development. Zenitsu and Inosuke still feel the same and I still wish they would get some development. Rengoku himself is very cool as a character and actually has potential to be hillarious. What sucks though is that he died at the end of the movie, which left me unsatisfied because I really love Rengoku and I wanna see more of him other than his fight with Akaza. Nezsuko is just being Nezsuko. The villains are just villains as they have no development but I don't mind because they're just there to fight in the Infinity train.
Enjoyment: 10/10
Honestly though. Despite the movie's problems that are carried from the show, I had a blast watching the fights. But this is because I watch it from a movie theater, and seeing the stunning animation of Demon Slayer combined with intense fights is like a juicy chef kiss. You american anime fans, I would highly recommend watching it in a movie theater as the visuals and animation will more likely blow you away. Overall, this movie gets a pretty high rating because it's more of a great eye candy to watch from a movie theater perspective. I don't know the experience from like a computer or a phone... Or a Nokia 3310. But if you already watch Demon Slayer and wanted to watch a movie mainly for awesome animation, this is a movie for you... Especially at movie theaters.
