What is... Death? An unavoidable disease that has given us by god? A part of soul that has ever existed within us and waiting for the day to show it's grimful face to us?
It doesn't matter what death is, but it’s important to know that as long as you’ve been cursed with “life” you can never avoid death.
Gorilla, the main character of the manga, has a deep and weirdly complex personality. When you start reading the manga, the first thing you’ll see is how natural Gorilla act. You would assume that he is unawere of the thing coming for him… but even worse, he know it very well. He know that the death will come and perish his monke soul; he know that the life he lived, the emotions he felt and shared, the ideology he consumed… will gone, they won’t be a part of him anymore. Not even the body he lived, or the mind that has been with him since his birth. So in other words, he’ll also lose what he call as “I”. His soul will be the only thing he’ll keep. A thing that he was not even awere that he had most of the time.
Knowing this all, knowing he’ll lose em all… Then why to act like this? Why to act like it’s just another wholsome Monke day? Why he was sad at the alternative chapter that he is still alive? The answer is easy yet darker than you might expect… Gorilla is happy.
He is happy that he’ll die. He is looking at the sharp blade of death without feeling any fear. He is letting the joy of his soul to spread! Spread and cover his body! He has no fear, he is happy because he won’t be a part of this wicked world anymore! He has opened his eyes and arms to the O’ Heavens that are waiting for him! Come sweet death… come and guide his soul to the eternal peace, let him forget this rotten world, let him left everythin he had in here behind…
Can we blame him anyway? The corruption on the earth made us all tired. In deep down we all wanna be the part of something holy. But we are afraid, afraid of others and ourselves.
Gorilla died lonely. There wasn't anyone near him or watching his soul ascending to salvation. I am not trying to say that this manga has a post-apocalyptic lore where everyone but Gorilla died. What I mean is that he chose it. He had one day, one whole day. More than enough to see his family and friends or at least other animals to give them a goodbye. But he didn't do that, he waited... waited... and waited. Just like we all do, he waited for something great, but unlike us he knew what he'll recieve. He died lonely, the solitude he has chosen gave him a peaceful last moment. No one needs to know, because it won't matter after he die, nothing will matter.
Now I know what truly death is, it's a chain that has been tightened our neck by life. We all are slaves, til' we break our chain.
