PREFACE: I’ve seen some crappy takes on here and I don’t think that some are giving Demon Slayer the fair shake it deserves because of how popular it is. While I don’t intend to be unfairly biased in favor of this movie, I would like it to be known that I did quite enjoy the original Demon Slayer and in conjunction with that, I will be reviewing the film with the context provided by the original Demon Slayer anime. That means that I could theoretically dock the film for not doing a very good job setting up the story of all the characters and the world, but since I've seen the anime and that is how the film is meant to be enjoyed, it is not a criticism I will be taking into account.
First, the animation. As anyone else will tell you, it is phenomenal. Everything moves with beautiful weight and quality and one of my favorite aspects about Demon Slayer’s animation and also with Mugen Train is the effects for the breathing forms that come during fights. Fights in general look fantastic in this movie and are absolutely breathtaking. Alongside that, another aspect of the animation that ufotable knocks out of the park is expressions. When a character is feeling something, the emotion is very heightened and you can very easily empathize with every character. Even a character like Inosuke, who is wearing a mask, is still very emotive through his gestures and movements.
The next thing I want to talk about are the characters. Tanjiro is of course a great protagonist, but the characters that really made this movie for me were Rengoku and Tanjiro’s siblings. Rengoku is a badass and you can tell why he is the Hashira and his willpower and determination along with his specific personality quirks make him an awesome character to watch and laugh at. As for Tanjiro’s siblings, they are one of the main ways that this story gets its emotional weight and it hits hard. Watching Tanjiro have to leave his family once again was a sad kick to the gut that made every moment when he had to cut himself out of the dream have a surprising impact. Zenitsu and Inosuke however, while being great characters in their own right who are both quite funny, don’t get quite as much serious emotional development as Rengoku and Tanjiro and that personally would’ve gone a long way to make this movie even better in my opinion. An important thing to note is that there isn’t a large character development for any character in the film. The closest thing to that is how Tanjiro and the gang are forced to uphold the expectations and beliefs placed in them after everything is said and done. Alongside that, everyone in this movie is very straightforward with regards to their personalities and motivations, however the simplicity works in Mugen Train’s favor since it makes it easy to understand every character’s role in the plot and the jist of who they are..
The last thing I want to mention is the voice acting which is fantastic. I personally watched the Japanese dub as that is my personal preference for watching Demon Slayer and it is quite good. Rengoku and Tanjiro definitely stand out in this regard, but every voice actor does an amazing job.
__In summary, I think that Demon Slayer is a great movie with amazing fights and huge emotional moments towards the end that are a must watch if you have seen Demon Slayer. Even if you haven't, I still think it is worth watching for the animation alone. I wholeheartedly recommend it.
