More than half of this hour long special was a recap while the rest felt like a subpar episode you'd find at the start of a season to push the plot forward. Almost nothing happened and I feel like my time was completely wasted. They did so much in this special while also doing absolutely nothing at all. It truly felt like a dream. Everything happened so fast, scenes just flew by, and you can barely find any tangible threads to hold the pieces together. Sadly, it was neither a good dream or a bad one. Just one of those ones you forget about thirty seconds after waking up in the morning.
First we get the reveal that Neiru was an AI. Could'a been cool but too bad that was brought up in the final 5 minutes with no resolution.
Then everyone just drifts away like nothing and it's only offhandedly mentioned despite the whole show being about the journey of them becoming friends.
Then we get Ai literally throwing her phone away because she doesn't want to talk to Neiru who she was trying to talk to for the whole first half of the episode??? Characters kept switching personalities back and forth so quickly it was jarring. Rika literally yells at Momoe about how she's a coward and then within a scene change or two she's breaking down because she doesn't want to die. I get she's hot headed, but the dichotomy of those scenes being so close to one another with nothing happening in between to change her resolve is confusing. Even Momoe who was breaking down before the special and avoiding everyone comes back and hangs out like the good old days with no explanation.
We finally get to see Koito again and it's just an unsatisfying "she's a parallel world Koito who is bit of a bully". Again, that could've been okay, this show is depressing, I get that. But it's handled with so little emotion that it's just a thing that happened. What happened to the heart in the writing??? This was supposed to be one of the emotional climaxes and it felt like nothing at all.
Hell, we even get a horribly cheesy fourth wall break with Ai joyfully spinning around to face the camera and declaring that she's back, despite it being the damn finale. It felt like we were about to get a "Season 2 confirmed" message with how she played it, but nothing.
There's just too much to critique here and this is kinda rambly. Overall, this special was a mess. I loved the series and the themes they brought to the table, and this special was supposed to be the saving grace to the terrible anime finale pacing. Instead, it simply left a stain on the anime as a whole and left me not even knowing if I want there to be more.
Perhaps there is a parallel world somewhere out there that got a satisfying conclusion to Wonder Egg Priority. Sadly, that is not this world.
