This movie is way too easy to spoil. So I am not even go and try to be spoiler free.
Lets go back to the past. To a time long ago A TIME BEFORE COVID well more specifically 2019 when Demon Slayer won the best animation OF THE DECADE even though Violet had aired the same year. Personally I really enjoyed this anime. It by no way was the best anime ever COUGH Ninja COUGH COUGH but it was still a really good anime. DS yes I am too lazy to type Demon Slayer, took the same route as MHA or more recently and a more better example JJK. Shonen anime where they don't do anything different like nothing. Even in this movie the main villain for most of the movie is a demon who can trap its enemies in its dreams, I think I have seen this somewhere before. Basically what I am saying this anime does nothing new like at all. But like Zenitsu's master once said
If you can't do anything else then train your self until you can become the best one trick pony ever
Or something like that I am not going to watch the anime just to get the quote. And it does this really well. Tanjiro is not a unique MC but there is something about him that is makes you not hate him. Really the most unique thing about this anime is that Tanjirio and Nesuko doesn't have an incest relationship. Now that is a wonderfully unique idea. But even when compared to MHA or JJK there was nothing special about DS. The only thing that DS had going for it that MHA and JJK was as good at was the animation department. The writing never felt as good or even comparable to the other 2 that is until this movie. So now lets finally actually talk about the movie.
Personally even in the the writing namely in the character writing department with the exception of the Kyoujurou Rengoku felt as good. But there is one thing aside from animation that this anime excels at better than the other 2 and that is the feels. Especially with this anime ending I mean if you didn't cry at the end you need to see a doctor. Like I mean the crows cried that is how sad the ending was. But lets go back to anything but the ending since I wanna end in the ending. Personally there is one thing and only one thing that makes this movie really good and that is Kyoujurou Rengoku himself. Like this guy reminded me of that guy from friend who is happy about everything even the doors. So Rengoku is that guy Lite or maybe Zero which ever you like. He the character that I cared about the most. He had this thing about him that didn't him not annoying personally. Most of the time you see when you see a character with this design and that entrance it is all but guarantied to be a annoying ass character. But this guy felt genuine. This can also be seen in his philosophy which is basically He has to use his gifts to serve other honorably till the end and you can really be brought into that. I can whole heartedly believe this man actually believes this. This is the key to the mystery the mystery of the success of this movie. Genuine that truly is the key.
I have wrote a whole paragraph about Kyoujurou Rengoku about him so lets move on a bit. The Fire Breath. There is something about this "power" that makes it look so crisp. The fact that Ufotable made this look interesting ais wonderfull. Also you can pretty much see his personality in it. About the other characters Tanjiro was a great paring with Rengoku but he also had his own movements. Namely the nightmare scene. Nezuko was cute as ever. Zenitsu was basically non-existent. Inosuke had his own movements but didn't much screentime. And from the villain didn't care at all about the first one. The lower demon. Nothing was remotely interesting there. The upper demon on the other hand was a great contrast to Rengoku. He was this guy whose ultimate goal was to get better. To be stronger. And watching him try to convince Rengoku to become a demon but at the same time being fully ready to kill was just a great thing to watch.
Now to the thing most of us are gonna remember this movie for the ending. This ending I am including the entire fight not just the death scene. I wasn't fully expecting this outcome. I mean like it was really obvious what Rengoku's fate was going to be but in my head the ending would go something like this. Rengoku and the demon fight. A great fight with spectacular animation but in the end the Demon would win and kill Rengoku. Seeing this and hearing Rengoku's final words something would awaken in Tanjiro allowing him to kill the demon. I am honestly shocked that wasn't what happened . That was a bold desicion which would make more actual sence but not as much as anime sense and I like it. It also gave hell of a lot more wait to Rengoku's death. His death may have motivated Tanjiro and gang but the demon is still out there and that fact makes this movie a lot more depressing.
My final thoughts are that this movie has one hell of an ending. A really sad, well animated(I mean it is ufotable we all know it is going to be great so didn't talk much about it) and a surprisingly bold ending. Only thing keeping it from being a masterpiece is the rest of the movie. Don't get me wrong the first2/3rds of the movie was fine but nothing special or mind-blowing.
