--- Please keep in mind, its 3AM while I'm writing this so please forgive any grammar or spelling errors, thanks.
--- Plot: Let me start by talking about the plot which, for most people, is probably the weakest part of the movie. Redline follows JP, a pretty laid-back kind of guy who absolutely loves racing. The movie takes place in a world where space travel isn't much of a problem and Redline, which is a race, is one of the most important events in the entire galaxy. Because of that, JP obviously wants to take part in it but unfortunately fails to qualify in Yellowline. Turns out, Redline is supposed to take place on a planet called Roboworld which is a heavily militarized planet, so a couple of racers drop out of Redline so JP is given the opportunity to take their place. He accepts. Now I don't want to spoil too much so instead I'll talk about why I absolutely love the plot in Redline and why I think it's way better than most people make it out to be.
The story is divided into 5 parts. 1 being the main race, Redline, 2 being the love story between JP and Sonoshee, the main love interest of the movie, 3 being the conflict between the military and the race, 4 being Frisbee's (JP's friend) connection to the mafia and finally 5, which isn't that important but worth mentioning, the short glimpses we are being shown of what's going on outside of all of this. Like people illegally gambling or betting on who they think is going to win the race and the police interfering, flashbacks etc. Eventually, all of these individual stories come together in the end, resulting in probably the best ending of any movie ever made. I'm not gonna spoil it of course but everything just perfectly being connected and coming together is what makes Redline's story amazing in my opinion. If the story doesn't interest you, no problem, its also an absolutely amazing action movie if you just want to lay back and have some mindless fun.
Characters: The characters are absolutely amazing especially when it comes to how they look. I'm not even kidding when I say that this movie has by far the best and most unique looking characters ever made. Who would've thought that you could actually give anime characters noses and put shading on their face? Some characters are just straight up goofy looking aliens while JP and Sonoshee actually look and behave like humans and not like your typical "EEEEHHH", "NANI??!!", "M-MASAKA" anime protagonist. The English dub is way better than the subbed version by the way, which is quite rare. All in all the characters are just really, really well made and there's quite a lot of character development considering the movie is only 1.5hrs long. Where the characters really shine though, are when it comes to the side characters. They actually have a personality, believe it or not, despite the fact that most of them only have like 3 minutes of screen-time. Combined with the character design, you'll most likely remember most of the cast, months after having watched the movie.
Art & Animation: This is what makes Redline stand out from literally every other anime, the animation is just unparalleled and also the reason the movie took 7 whole years to produce. If you look at literally any frame of Redline you'll immediately recognize it that's how good and unique it looks. This entire movie is just a piece of art from start to finish so even if you don't care about the story, the characters or anything else, you'll still enjoy it as long as you're interested in seeing some really good animation.
Sound: The music absolutely slaps. That's all I can say really. There is over an hour of music if you combine all the songs together and the entire movie is only 1.5hrs long. Every single song fits the scene perfectly but what stood out to me the most is the credits song, Redline Day. Sometimes I just listen to it while falling a sleep it's just incredibly comforting to me I don't know why.
So yeah that's all there really is to it.
--- Conclusion: Redline, to me, is absolute perfection. I've watched it four times now and it gets me hyped every single time I see the ending scene. It's nothing short of a masterpiece that everyone should at the very least give a try, it's also a great movie to watch with friends. I understand that it's not for everyone as it is a very over-the-top, action heavy movie but I cant think of a single thing I disliked and that's why I'm giving it a perfect score.
