A Silent voice was originally a manga that lasted from August 7th, 2013 to November 19th, 2014, now in a movie format. This movie came out in September 2016 by the studio Kyoto animation. I have not read the manga, so I do not know if anything that I am saying is dotted on in the manga, so I may be wrong, and I do apologize.
The genres that Anilist had for silent voice include drama, romance and slice of life. Personally, I really enjoy the romance genre, and I am always looking for good anime to watch from that genre. While I have never been a big fan of incorporating drama into romance, I think it provides a different feeling to what you are watching, having you on edge the whole time.
I think that When you make a movie like this it can either be very well-made or just okay, and in this instance I think it was just okay. I don't hate it, but I didn't particularly like it either, it was just okay. I had heard from friends of mine that this was a very good movie and that it's one that everyone should watch. While I do agree with them, I think that after watching this, I'm having some mixed emotions. When watching a romance, I tend to look more about how the characters are introduced and how they develop together. I felt that when watching silent voice, there was a lot of development between the two main characters, Shouko Nishimiya and Shouya Ishida.
Shouya Ishida had a rough childhood, his mother never had a lot of money, and we never got to meet his father. At the beginning, he is this popular kid and a bully to others. After a certain incident, he reflects on his actions and almost ends it all. Having given it more thought, he decides that he wants to learn sign language in an attempt to reconcile for what he has done.
Shouko Nishimiya is a deaf girl who has also had a rough childhood due to not being able to hear. Constantly having to transfer schools and using a notebook to talk to others. She comes off in a way that makes you feel bad for her and the way that she is treated due to this. Stuff happens at her old school, and she transfers to the same school that Shouya Ishida is enrolled in. Not long later, she transfers out due to reasons and disappears.
Throughout my viewing of this, I was questioning, what made this a romance? After finishing the movie, I was still a little confused because I was not able to distinguish this from being a movie about loss, suffering and romance or being a movie about loss and suffering. I think that it could have used more romance and I think that if it did, there's a chance that the parts where it really hits home for our main characters could have been even more emotional. That said though, I think this movie was a roller coaster of emotions, from dislike, to shock, to surprise to having to watch with my hands over my eyes. This movie was filled with so much.
A Silent Voice is a movie where you can understand the pain and hardship that the characters go through, and you can feel for what is happening. It is a movie that I encourage everyone to watch, no matter what genres you enjoy watching. While I think it is held in higher regard than it should be, you can tell that the creators, animators, and musicians put their all into making this what it has become today.
