It was the year 2019. Anime was popping off, anime was really good. Crazy titles like demon slayer and season 2 of one punch man were slapping harder then ever. It was no secret that i was enjoying myself. But something was missing. No waifu’s. There was literally not a single anime girl in the area for me call waifu of the year and i was disappointed. But then, i saw what anime with enticing title that may have what I've been looking for. Domestic girlfriend, ay? Cant be that bad can it? Even if it is ill just watch it for an episode or two. Its not like i'ma end up obsessed with the anime, end up being emotional invested in the characters, get involved with the online community and spend all my free time enbetween my job reading the manga or anything… cough cough yeah that didn't go as planned did it…
Why you need to watch domestic girlfriend:
Written and directed by
Levi Capone
If you were here when i uploaded my first video where i basically was figuring out how to edit and gushing over the anime vivy: fluorite eye song, then you should be well aware that i was planning on making a video about this anime and manga the week after. Weeeelll, that didn't go exactly to plan because “DEPRESSION” and i also have been putting in a lot of time in effort in my gaming channel PLAY A CLIP -clip ensues- and i just haven't got around to it until now. So strap in and lets jump right into it
Synopsis:
Without any spoilers, all i can really say is that domestic girlfriend is about a high school student named Natsuo, who is in loved with his English teacher -ahh yes anime, where English teachers are essentially green eyed milfs with big ass tiddies - Natsuo is then invited to a mixer where a cute girl his age invites him over to her place where they end up doing the fornication. Natsuo only ends up agreeing to this because he believes a relationship with his English teacher is so far fetched that he minus well end up having sex when he can. He is a virgin after all. It wasn't until he goes home that night that he finds out his father is getting remarried and that his fathers new fiance is coming over with her daughters. Pleased to meet his new family, natsuo is surprised to see his future step mother with the English teacher he is in love with “hina” and the girl he just fucked “Rui.” after putting two in two together, Natsuo quickly realizes the situ -fuckin-wation he is now in as they are gonna start living together. Bruh when i saw this seen in the anime i was like “what? Th- this anime has the fucking plot point of a fucking brazzers production. Nice ;)”
Part 1: the anime faults
I believe i said something like this before but there are certain aspects of manga that doesn't translate well in anime when a manga gets its adaptation. Specific beats that keep readers intrigued enough to purchase the next copy isn't necessarily whats gonna keep a watcher interested enough to watch another episode. What the big boy ani-tuber, gigguk, calls specific moments in this anime as “spicy” is what the anime relies heavy on. But it just doesn't sing the right song and tune is off, because the anime kinda puts the whole situation in a more bare bones perspective and reminds you on how fucking silly it is. When you read the manga, you go gasp “no way i have to read the next 45 thousand pages immediately, while the anime makes you go “hehe what the fuck? Dude that was weird.’ the manga just makes everything far more dramatic and as someone who watched the anime first, i can personally vouch for this. The ending of the anime didn't really make much sense either, and was fairly weird and left a bitter taste in my mouth because it felt like there need much, much, much more to happen and well there was fucking believe me
Part two: the manga
The manga is where this fucking show really takes off, i mean i never had so many fucking curve balls thrown at my fucking face while reading a Asian comic book in my entire god damn life. And as someone who is into manga as much as he is into western comic books, a medium where characters have to constantly evolve after each reboot in order to keep the readers entertained, i was honestly surprised. Everything you ever new about pacing in story telling is basically thrown the fuck out the window. Its really feels like the plot is moving slowly, at a steady pace, before the author takes the wheel and floors it while going down hill a fucking canyon. And all you can do it strap your seat belt in and hope for the best. It wasn't in a bad way though, for whatever reason it worked. It had lots of fun reading this silly fucking manga for reasons i can not explain.
Part three: Natsuo as a character
Even though Natsuo is a complete closet pervert that fucks his sisters, dates his sisters, and even likes being call onii-chan by them, he is generally one of the most "unapologetically" nice characters I've seen in manga. A lot of writing on this front can be a real shit show, like for instants Deku in mha (is he really gonna talk shit about my hero academia again?) yes. Making a character pure as good is pretty simple. Make them stick to there morals, trump evil and hard ship, make them vulnerable and cry all the time and bada bing bada boom you got yourself deku. With characters like this, the whole “good” aspect of them becomes increasingly boring and tired fairly quickly. Another character i could compare this too is takemichi from this season’s tokyo revengers. We have another character crying, pissing, and shitting every other episode and it doesnt help when he is always getting his shit kicked in. (i can go into more detail about this but i think ima start here) natsuo on the other hand is good because he is his morals. As a reader, your not treated like a stupid fucking baby that has to be remind that this character is good and is working hard. Natsuo struggles, works hard, loves who he loves, cries in situations that are relatable (i mean they are extra relatable if u are fucking your sisters buut anyways) natsuo is as good as he is because in the situations where he would take an easy way out or a normal person wouldnt bother, he goes that extra mile. Its funny to say this but shit shonnen anime could possibly learn a thing or two from this echi slice of life manga. Other characters that are able to get this right are: okabe from steins gate, akane and shinya from pycho pass, naruto from.. Naruto, ginko from mushishi, every jojo from the jojo series, and so many more that just get it right
Part Four: Natsuo as a writer
Natsuo’s biggest dream is to be a Novelist and has internal struggle with this along the way. Whether its tackling a script instead of tradition righting or not being able to write because you are depressed due to a blue haired anime girl doing what blue haired anime girls do best and thats being fucking annoying or simply having something to strive some how adds to his character development as much as the other two love interest in the manga. Natsuo is pure as gold but he is still human and with that comes with real human responsibilities. Sometimes your passion has be pushed aside for things that happen in your life, or maybe its a choice due to wanting someone else’s growth and blossom. And no matter what your passion is, especially as something that is creative like writing, you have to work at your skills to be the best possible writer as you can. Just because you enjoy art doesnt make you an expert and that is put very plainly into this anime. Also, i cant say this for sure, but i think natsuo is partly based off of the manga’s author’s experience i mean there is no way he isnt. The details that natsuo and togen sensei go into on about writing is just too damn specific for it to be “writer's intuition” this is just a theory but relatively interesting. Rui is living in america and deals with racism at the most petty level by someone who is jealous of here cooking skills. I believe this is something that either happened to the author of the manga, orr, has happened to someone she knows and was able to spin it into a narrative for the general public. I mean, its said over and over again how other peoples experiences and emotions being brought to light through writing as well as your own experiences and emotions just makes the writing that much better and authentic. Sounds fishyyy. But again thats just a theory
Part five: Hina is best girl
I do not give a single fuck about what you say, how many anime titles youve seen, how many manga chapters your watch, if you own a kangaroo, i dont care if your dad is obama or what, Hina-nee is easily the best girl. If you honestly think a blue hair petite shy anime girl comes close to a older mature greened eye cougar anime girl with giant hugh mungus mommy melon milkers that likes to get fucked up then you are tripping harder then then a gas station crack head after smoking da pack. Not only is she is she far more attractive, she is far less annoying and ill get to that in a moment but right now we are talking about hina. Hina has undoubtedly gone through a lot. Between falling inlove with the same guy as her sister, that just so happens to be her step brother makes her feel like a complete failure. She has this awareness to her situation that no character in the anime actually fucking has. She understands that dating someone thats far younger then she is, one of her students, and her step brother is something that no body in there right fucking mind should EVER do. Because of this, she represses her god damn emotions even though she really loves natsuo. Plus she even does this for the sake of her sister, because she wants her to be happy with natsuo before she should be happy with natsuo. THATS FUCKING WHOLE AS FUCK. also, there is an arch where she feels loss as a teacher and wants to change professions. This is a really beautiful message because as young people we are always told that after highschool, you must IMMEDIALtly choose what your life long profession is and that you need to study it non stop for the next four fucking years at a university and if not, you die. I constantly flip flop on what i want to do in life so i felt this kinda relatable and relieving because if i end up not liking the job or interest i have now, i can always end up trying again in the future.
Part 7 : Rui is not best girl
Rui isnt a bad character by any means and i liked her character progression through out the manga and anime, its just she is a bit annoying. She is constantly getting jealous and constantly claims that natsuo is cheating when he just isnt. Maybe its because i have personal experiences with women who did the same thing out of insecurity -fuck you stacy- but that literally causes unnecessarily stress for both rui herself and natsuo. Im not gonna go into spoilers here but she does something to natsuo which makes it harder to psychally function and no i do not mean she pegged him. She is overly jealous, immature at times, and just doesnt know how to communicate her feelings like a fucking adult. But the comedic aspect of Rui is undeniably one of my favorite parts of her as a character and she is an incredibly brave, kind, hard working individual that goes through hardship like the rest of the cast. A lil random and unexpected aspects but still good fun.
In conclusion:
As i puff on my jazz cigarette filled with watermelon gelato in the moonlit nighttime cafe at Coffee rin in chiba, japan, i take a moment to gaze apon the stars. I reflect on my time i had spent with these characters and reminisce on what ive learn and how i can apply these lesson to my real life. Follow your heart, your never alone, you can always try again, and going two steps backwards is sometimes needed to go 4 steps forward. Even though this anime reinforced my love for teacher love interest, it taught me new things. That anything is possible. Like fuckin shit, someone got rich from making a manga about a guy fucking his sisters.
