PERFECT DEMONSTRATION OF HOW "NOT EXPLAINED BUT COOL" IS NOT COOL
~~~
Today I'm going to talk about the work of the moment, probably of the year, given the sales of the manga that resulted from the airing of this anime. I can understand the reason for this explosion but unfortunately I do not agree with it at all.
_________
PLOT
Tokyo Revengers is set in the present day, at least initially. This is because our protagonist Takemichi Hanagaki accidentally discovers that he has a power capable of making him travel through time, to be precise 12 years in the past. He uses this power to change the past, in order to avoid the death of his ex-girlfriend Hinata Tachibana.
So far everything is fine and the premises are practically the same as those of another famous work that deals with time travel, Erased. Indeed, I withdraw what I said, "so far all right" absolutely not, because the anime starts immediately with a journey through time of very dubious credibility and on which we are not given any convincing explanation. In this moment the first alarm bell rang but I thought "Ok, you made a mistake immediately on a very important concept but you have plenty of time to make up for the adventures of our intrepid protagonist" (also because of how the time-travel was set up, I had already resigned myself to the fact that we would never have that explanation we needed). From here on out, however, the logically downside has only gotten worse. Tokyo Revengers, in fact, almost immediately proved to me that it is a work suitable for an audience that doesn't ask questions, but who simply enjoys what happens because there are kids who beat each other, people who die, etc. The plot, to be able to reach this ideal of "cool", therefore leaves aside any sort of explanation or logical choice by the characters who do nothing but cool things but only making choices that no one would ever make in their situation. The keyword of the anime therefore becomes "FORCED", only and only forced in everything, to the point of being truly out of this world. I use the plot paragraph to talk about another gigantic problem of this anime, the power system. Kids who, theoretically, should all be on a similar level, being that they are all the same age and no one plays sports like karate, judo, boxing etc. Yet there is literally an abyss between the normal student and the Draken / Mikey on duty with some peculiar scenes that even show us people throwing a 20-meter opponent with a single punch.
Power system that punctually becomes ridiculous in other cases where it is convenient, such as taking hundreds of punches in the face and getting up immediately afterwards as if nothing had happened.
In addition to this Tokyo Revengers is characterized by the particularity of the non-existence of any human being over 18, with a fatal clash between hundreds of people that takes place in the center of the town, under the eyes of dozens and dozens of people from their apartments that do not they say absolutely nothing, as if our characters were invisible. I was more understanding in the opening episodes regarding the brawling under the bridges, but here we are talking about a war in broad daylight and in a very visible area.
CHARACTERS
As for the characters, this anime left me very perplexed. If on the one hand we still have acceptable characters such as Draken, Mikey, Baji who always have a purpose within the events and almost never make particularly senseless choices, on the other hand we have probably the worst protagonist that has ever been seen in an anime. Takemichi is literally an amoeba in this context, spending 90% of the time crying or regretting things she hasn't even tried to do. The climax of this protagonist we have it in episode 21 in which during the beating between 2 characters (to avoid spoilers) he notices that the event that he should have avoided to fulfill his mission is approaching but he stands sensationally watching them. , crying and saying "I couldn't do anything" while those 2 are still there in front of his eyes and he could at least try to stop them. I do not require Takemichi to succeed but at least to try, even if he should take a few punches as a side effect (our dear protagonist is composed of Titanium, stainless steel and vibranium, because otherwise it is not explained how he manages to collect so many blows).
Another truly ridiculous character is Kazutora, who is the full demonstration of how you don't create a crazy character. Kazutora is literally the comic element of TR's second arc, with the problem that TR shouldn't be funny. A character who, taking advantage of his characterization of mad, does nothing but change his opinion and find unthinkable mental processes to make the plot more cool, with the defect that a sketched character must be characterized very well, especially in the motivation for which he has gone crazy (sensationally forced and meaningless).
ART/ANIMATIONS__
To further worsen the already drastic situation from the point of view of contents, Lidenfilms takes care of it, which proves to be a studio totally unsuitable for this kind of works. While in the "slice of life" scenes, and therefore with little movement, the drawings are almost acceptable, when the fight begins in the arch of Valhalla, any value, even minuscule, goes completely to hell. In addition to the excessive amount, especially in the first episode of the fight, of static images, it also puts a really poor quality in the dynamic scenes (perfect representation of Takemichi's big ass in this sequence).
Come on, wtf is this???
MUSIC
On the sound level, nothing particularly negative to say. I don't like the OP very much personally while the 2 EDs listen to them very willingly. As for the OST they are interesting even if nothing sensational.
CONCLUSION
To conclude I think this anime is completely a hole in the water and the main problem is that it has problems in all aspects, it does not have a single defect in the characters rather than in the graphics, but it has rather serious problems in all fields. I understand why this work has been so successful, that is, thanks to this concept of "everything that happens is cool, then explain it or not it doesn't matter". Unfortunately I am a person who when watching anime asks himself some questions about the most essential things and at that moment this anime is completely lacking from all points of view. Logically everything I said refers to the anime, having not read the original work (although for what little I have seen, I have no positive opinions on that one either).
