1-nichi Go ni Shinu Gorilla is without a doubt the most profound, influential and defining work that humanity has and will produce. No words can truly encapsulate it and no explanation can ever accurately portray it. It is an experience, one which will leave you with a completely different view on existence once you are through.
The manga chronicles the tale of Its titular protagonist Gorilla as he grapples with the concept of his inevitable demise. The story is told over a total of a total of three chapters. However, the two concluding episodes do not fit into a linear timeline. 1-nichi Go ni Shinu Gorilla offers two different ending chapters. When i first noticed this, I hoped that one of them would allow the reader to experience a reality where gorilla did not die.
With this hope in mind, I read through the alternate ending, only to discover that gorilla still passes, albeit in a different manner. I was in disbelief, as I couldn't comprehend what the purpose of this chapter was if it was going to end in the same way.
As time passed however, i began to understand. Death is inevitable. Humans struggle all their lives to try and keep it at bay for as long as they can, because they cant accept the fact that there is no stopping it. Everything about 1-nichi Go ni Shinu Gorilla is a metaphor for events in our daily life. The ending is spoiled in the name itself. However, as the story progresses, readers become attached to Gorilla and desperately hope that he survives, even though they know in the back of their minds that it wont happen.
The story is designed to make you empathize with Gorilla and grow to care for him, even if you don't realize it at first. This just makes the final chapter hit even harder as you hope desperately that there is some way to avoid what is to come
As i reached the ending chapter I realized that the real gorilla was the friends we made along the way. With the power of hard work and friendship, anything can be achieved. We must all treasure the gorillas in our lives, because they are the ones who keep us truly human. Once its all over, the gorilla will have been inside of us all along
It only makes sense that the story was inspired and loosely based on the real life tragedy of Harambe at the Cincinnati zoo. This story is a fitting tribute to one of the most influential and iconic beings of this millennium. While some may argue this automatically ruins the climax, the same was essentially done in the title of the story itself, rendering this argument pointless
We must not waste our lives doing what is socially accepted in the hope that at least when we die, we will do so without regrets. When our time truly comes, what we will regret is not doing what we desired to, not living 'in the moment'. Its time to stop worrying about what others say you must do and make the most of the life you are given
