And once again your expectations are destroyed. Thorfinn's sole purpose in life is demolished and Vinland Saga becomes what it truly is, a manga not about war and violence but about how horrible they are. His quest to find purpose trailed along with Einar results in the absolute pinnacle of the manga, his objective to create a land without wars and slaves, the moment when he becomes a true warrior, a part so good it reminds you that the first one was just the prologue. Thorfinn's mission instills such hope (for lack of a better word) that i couldn't avoid completing it in just some days.
You know everything i said up until now? Forget that for the rest of the manga. The quality of everything drops so abruptly that I questioned myself if someone switched the latter chapters with some fan made project. The characters are comparable to generic isekai ones, devoid of any personality and serving only the purpose to advance the story. The tone suffered the most brutal change, for the manga becomes so lighthearted that it trivializes Thorfinn's quest for peace and redemption and makes you forget what were his motives in the first place. There was this part too which I especially hated were this soldier was dying waiting for Valhalla, but there was no such thing as that. Why? Am I so dumb I need that to say war = bad? However, there is a dog, so i think that makes up for pretty much all this. Liked Karli too, how he is analogous to Thorfinn as a kid and represents him unstained by death and his hope to redeem himself from such.
But of course, this is but the groundwork for the bigger play Dog Saga, however you normies wouldn't understand the philosophy and moral implications so I'll just skip that.
First review, and even though this sucks it was a fun experience, maybe I'll even do this again idk. Hope this was interesting enough though.
