This isn't my review directly, but summarizing what my dad thought of the show as we finished season 1. This was what my father said about re:zero. Btw, slight spoilers. Also anything where I mention "he" is me referring to my dad
Characters:
"I really like the overall cast with its weird and expressive characters. It adds to the charm"
Subaru: was annoying at first, but as the series progressed, he develops as a character and being likable with every death..
Rem: was his favorite. found her very likable and was shocked at the ending (for director's cut) but found some boob humor unnecessary (like when she pulled subaru from the white whale and landed on her and said "Thanks for that. It was pleasant")
Emilia: kinda found her pointless. says he finds her as the reason why Subaru fights, because its the "Damsel in distress" cliche which he has seen several times. "she is just kinda there to motivate Subaru only"
Ram: liked her attitude but was kinda just there. did enjoy her story with Rem, however
Beatrice: kinda just there and pointless. says that anyone else could have told subaru about the curses and the mabeasts (even though I tried to tell him she is literally the only one who knows the most about magic)
Roswaal: understands he is busy as a lord of a domain and helping Emilia for the election, but found it very weird at first when he interacted with Ram, like when he stroked Ram's hair, until he realizes it was attempts on regenerating her horn, which then he changed his view slightly on Roswaal
Ferris: found him weird, but like able, but also finds his appearance as a catgirl, despite being male, uncalled for and unecessary.
Wilhelm: wishes to seem more of him in the series. should have a bigger role. and found him as a badass "I really like when he jumped onto a sword and fucking Ricardo swings his sword like a bat to launch him. badass."
Ricardo: found him kinda pointless for the fighting
Crusch: cool and likes her because she is a respectable rival, one who doesn't wanna keep stuff to herself.
Juli: found him as a badass, and wishes to see more of him for season 2
Betelguese: found him incredibly intimidating and as a good villain, one who goes with his plans, succeeds in some cases, and posed a threat to the protagonists which he found amazing.
Story:
says that he loved how the story was paced, found the first arc decent, found second arc really good, but loved the third arc. while he does find the different time lines interesting, he finds the development of Subaru as the best. To quote him as well "This shit is so weird, but you want to keep watching to find out what happens next. Weird, but good." He gives the show an 8.5/10
His reactions as the series progressed:
He thought the show was fine but when "Who's Rem" happened when the white whale was encountered, he got hooked. He also did gasp in the post-credits of the Director's Cut again.
Obviously this is a different type of review, but it was interesting to see my dad and his takes on this series. When we finish season 2, I will make another review of what he said. Still surprised he enjoyed this series.
