Wow. Just wow, I felt like a fish blown out of water watching this. I was expecting romance and all and I got hit by a mother trucking ocean of emotions. I was not expecting this, and damn the lessons to learn from it. I feel like I need to write them down before I forget them! So quick spoiler warning.
Friendship, damn. This hits hard, life is indeed very difficult as you can see Ishida attempts suicide but stops himself. I am proud and glad that before he was gonna jump off he wanted to finish everything, giving enough money to his family, saying goodbye to Shouko in some way by giving her the notebook.
This really shows how everyone is a fractured human being to an extent, I love the fact that the people who save him are one of the first ones who turn on him. I also love how he slowly rebuilds his relationship with his past friends and that most did want to reconnect and reach out to some extent as well, like Ueno and Sahara. ~~Is this going where I think it is? Is Ishida secretly a harem protagonist?! Nah no way, lol.~~ I loved how his journey started by helping Nagatsuka, that was like the first step on his redemption arc, absolutely adored how he gave his own bike and they became friends. I respect that, helping someone out when they are being bullied takes so much courage, I just feel like a deer in headlights in most situations.
Ueno and Kawai's duality is also an accurate representation of how people can be really contradictory. I found Ueno an enigma for most of this, I felt she was actually kind and good-natured to Shouko then stopped and eventually bullied her due to the others' harmful comments, and then she seemed to be back to being good to people by trying to reconnect with Ishida after bullying him. I felt that was nice, in fact, I thought at one point she may have had a crush on Ishida.
Depression and sadness. I don't have a lot to say about this, I'll try to organise this neatly. I really felt how Shouko blamed herself for everything bad going around her regarding Ishida. I still don't get or understand what happened to her as a child in Yuzuru's flashbacks regarding her considering suicide when younger as a child, but yea most likely due to how she was treated in year 6 was it? I like how Ishida was also very similar to her in that aspect, he blamed himself for all that happened. These were quite honestly the most heartbreaking scenes that hit me the most as I have felt like that in plenty of situations. Usually, for me, it's because I just can't control my mouth.
Now, these are just some miscellaneous aspects that I loved that I couldn't sort out. The fact that Shouko's mother tolerated his presence for her birthday and was willing to give him another chance was just?(perfect/ok hand emoji). The scene where Ishida reminisces and remembers he never asked for Shouko to forgive him just made me cry my heart out. That is truly an example of thinking really deeply when you can see your or someone else's life flash before your eyes.
Finally, there seems to be a manga for this and this is adapted from that, so I am gonna rush there and read this. If you've stuck to the end for my rambling I am very happy! Just know this was like me typing all this fresh after watching the movie to convey my emotions and write down what stuck with me.
