Demon Slayer is the type of show where despite having an average story I still enjoy it loads and it's all completely down to ufotable. Now I'm the type of person who usually gets annoyed when I see people enjoying something with a bad story purely because of the animation (for example Sword Art Online) but ig now I have become one of the people I disliked as I now find myself ignoring some of the worse parts of Demon Slayer purely because the animation is so good. Anyway, this is quite simply a review of the newest Demon Slayer Season so there will be spoilers- you have been warned! Anyway, without further ado let's talk about the show that's been taking the world by storm.
Plot:
Demon Slayer Season 2 leaves off right after the Mugen Train Movie or TV series (whichever one you ended up watching or if you watched both versions like idiot me) and immediately kicks off as we are taken to the Entertainment District with sound hashira Tengen Uzui to hunt down some demons. The actual plot and story of Demon Slayer is always a weak point for me because I don't find it necessarily bad like some people think I just find it painfully average. There are good bits and bad bits but overall it's just an average shounen that doesn't do too much different and follows the usual formulas. This season is no exception as we follow the classic structure:
-Exposition and Setup
-Find the Demons
-Initial Fight
-Main Fight/Climax
-Ending/Resolution (aka Tanjiro feeling bad for demons despite them having nearly killed him like 10 seconds ago)
Despite the story following the same structure, it's still enjoyable and I found that this season had a slightly more interesting plot than the previous arcs and it's purely down to the new characters we are introduced to.
But anyway, for the plot I would give this season a 6.5/10- it's nothing special but it's not necessarily bad either.
Characterisation:
Here we go it's now time to talk about the new characters we are shown- most importantly, the sound hashira Tengen Uzui. At first, Tengen definitely made the worst impressions as he just shows up, tries to abduct some girls, slaps Aoi on the bum, and then we find out he has three wives! However, Tengen's character does get a lot better as the story progresses. We find out about his past which was interesting and I personally preferred him more than Rengoku as I felt we had more time to get used to Tengen and learn more about him so I felt more attached to what could happen to him in this arc.
As for other new characters we of course need to talk about the demons that are fought against in this arc: Daki and Gyutaro (aka the two upper moon rank 6 demons)
The demons in this arc I personally found quite annoying and irritable but since literally all the other demons we have met so far in the story have been annoying- asides from Akaza- they are on the less annoying side of the spectrum. However, as we reach the resolution of this arc and Tanjiro does the usual pity on the demons that have been defeated we do see the past of these demons and...yeah...it does hurt. I didn't cry but it was definitely a sad development that made me see them in a new light but it still doesn't make me ignore the annoying aspects of both characters with Daki crying literally every few seconds like a spoilt brat and Gyutaro having that annoying voice tick that literally made me want to pull my ears off at multiple points.
Anyway, moving away from the new characters- the characterisation for the characters we know of Tanjiro, Nezuko, Inosuke and Zenitsu are pretty basic. Zenitsu stays the most annoying character and Inosuke is just classic Inosuke. Tanjiro and Nezuko despite having many cool fight moments, the fights ultimately don't really impact their characters in any way so there was really no character development which sucks but that's just classic Demon Slayer.
So anyway, overall, the characterisation was 7/10 as the new characters were really interesting but there is no real character development for the old characters.
Character Dynamics:
As for dynamics between characters ig the one that should be brought up is the relationship between Tengen and his three wives and the relationship between the three wives. I thought this was really well done and I felt attached to this relationship very quickly. At first, the idea of someone having three wives didn't sound right to me but it was handled really well and the love between them never felt forced and unnatural.
As for other dynamics, the next best one to speak of is definitely the relationship between the two demons and the parallel that has with Tanjiro and Nezuko. Daki and Gyutaro are siblings who were both transformed into demons and Tanjiro brings up how maybe if things had turned out differently he and Nezuko could have become like them. My favourite aspect of this dynamic was definitely the portrayal of this sibling relationship with the younger sister (Daki) relying on the older brother (Gyutaro) and the resolution of the arc with the two of them arguing but then walking to hell together, in the end, did make me tear up slightly
In terms of other character dynamics, there is ofc the dynamic between the trio (Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Inosuke) which definitely climaxes as they all work together to defeat the demons which was really nice so overall I would say this was well done: 8/10
Visuals/ Animation Quality:
Right here we go. This and I mean it THIS is the only reason why Demon Slayer is as popular as it is. I understand some people will get annoyed at me and say it's because of the characters and story etc. but we all know deep down that if ufotable never picked up Demon Slayer and another studio did that it would be nowhere near as popular as it is now.
Ufotable's animation is 'flashy' (as Tengen would say) and stunning. The overlapping visuals and the amount of attention taken for each blow and scene is just mind-blowing. I feel like I don't have enough words to fully express this animation so here are some gifs:
So yeah this is easily a 10/10Voice Acting:
I mean it has great voice acting like always. The only thing that gets on my nerves is the usual Zenitsu voice that makes me lose my mind whenever I hear him whine about every little thing. Also, Gyutaro's voice tick with the "yo na" sound at the end or whatever the sound is you guys know what I mean. Asides from that the voice acting was great so a 9/10 for this section.
Music/Soundtrack:
Aimer's music is great and the songs she wrote for this season of Demon Slayer are no exception both Zankyou Zanka and Asa ga Kuru are great songs with my favourite of the two being the former and they just serve to get you hyped for the episode. Plus separate from the opening and ending theme the musical scores for the actual battles this season were great and really helped propel the action scenes which were already incredible with the animation so I was basically just almost passing out from the hype every episode especially as the season passed the halfway mark as every episode from then on was just a masterpiece.
So anyway, this is a strong 9.5/10
Fight Choreography/ Pacing:
The first half of the season felt a bit slow to me but ofc compared to the heavy action of the latter half it would be but as it went over the halfway mark the pacing I found was perfect. It was fast-paced, the fight choreography was just insane as some of the gifs in the visual/animation section show you.
Therefore, this is a 9.5/10
Genre Mixing:
Now by genre-mixing, I'm referring to when a series mixes two opposing genres and how it is handled. In this series, I will be specifically referring to the action and more serious scenes with comedy aspects. Now in my personal opinion, I don't find demon slayer that funny- even when it tries to be I'm usually not laughing but I found that this season was an exception with Inosuke asking the questions everyone is thinking as he calls out Zenitsu's new attitude now he is asleep with stuff like: "How are you running whilst asleep?", "When did you become so much braver?" etc. So basically the answer to this is Inosuke was the best character of this season (along with Tengen). But anyway for the most part this genre-mixing aspect wasn't evident as most of the time the serious action moments were purely serious with no real comedic aspects which worked well so this was an 8.5/10
Conclusion:
Overall, this season was quite easily the best part of Demon Slayer up till now. Mugen Train was also really good but it's hard to deny that the first part of the arc was painfully slow and it only really picked up in the final section with the fight against Akaza whereas this arc was constantly good and entertaining. There was no part where I felt bored and I just found this to be really fun. Although the story isn't incredible and not that unique it doesn't really need to be. The reason I'm watching this isn't for an amazing story it's just for some dumb fun which just happens to be done by ufotable.
So, end of this review, do I recommend watching Demon Slayer? It depends what you are looking for in a show- if you are looking for a really good story then no don't watch Demon Slayer but if you are looking for just a fun show with good animation then you can do no better than this.
