Spoiler free review, spoiler sections are marked
There is this notion going around that a story needs to be complex, unpredictable and/or one of a kind to be any good. That notion is wrong. Anyone working in the professional field will tell you that. The best story can become bad if someone without skills narrates it; and the vice versa is also true. Demon Slayer knows what it is and what it needs to focus on.
It is about a story of a Brother, with a vast heart, trying to help his sister overcome a certain difficulty. There aren't hundreds of different important characters, only a handful. There is no vast world-building, only a home and beyond that; danger. And the author focuses perfectly on that. This series has its unpredictable "oh! I see!" moments but moreso well written characters and a consize story. Saying Demon Slayer has nothing itself but just rides the success of first season is incredibly reductive and speaks of bias than anything else. If that was true, many others who picked up the manga afterwards, myself included, would've just dropped it after the first chapter. Bcs the art is rough. No, it has little to do with the animation and people see that. Many manga try to be more what they are and lose completely their way and become worse. Demon Slayer keeps the pace up and becomes even better. The last arc was incredibly stressful for me, I anticipated every chapter in excitement.
STORY-SPOILER
CONCLUSION
For me, this a 9/10 and a manga I eagerly waited to read every week. I love the characters, love the lore and story, and love even many of the antagonists. To concentrate on breathing as the main power source, which is really the most important thing to keep us alive, is a smart move. If you love narration driven stories, this one is for you. If you can watch a movie, where two people do nothing but talk about their fair share of life, and love it, this one is for you.
