Try to read the following as fast as you can.
There are many reviews out there for this anime already, so why write another one?
Well, simply put, because it does deserves it.
Supposedly, there's a cult following around Tatami Galaxy - I never read much into that, I just noticed that it doesn't seem to gather the attention of most people in general, even among some who watch a lot of anime and are open to watching "weird" stuff.
Tatami Galaxy was an anime I decided to watch on a whim, I didn't care much for it after reading its description and checking the cover and some promotional videos, thinking it wouldn't be all that interesting... Well, I have to say I was completely wrong, and good on me for being wrong! What a great surprise this was.
The very first episode had me hooked. Now, before I go any deeper, I must say -
Do not judge this anime based on its Art (that is, if it doesn't suit you the very first time you look at it). The art is quite unique and differs heavily from the usual modern anime approach, and the characters can also be rather exquisite, but this has a purpose, it fits the theme beautifully, and in fact, after 1 or 2 episodes you understand why it looks the way it does and it grows on you.
Tatami Galaxy shows us (among many other themes) something many of us have thought about before:
What would I do if I had the chance to go back in time and do things differently? How would I change my path? What could I improve? Would I have the guts to ask that girl out? Were the decisions I made the "correct" ones?
Obviously, this isn't the first time a form of media deals with this issue, however, the difference here is how they present it, which is magnificent, almost as if it were a retelling of a character's story but through different routes (think routes in a VN for example). The different paths taken by the main character "Watashi" in his life become more and more hilarious with each episode. Particularly of note to me is the very beginning of each episode after the intro plays out - that scene, in such a small amount of time, when he talks about his expectations for life in/after University can capture so much hilarity after you "get a feel for it" that I start laughing as soon as I remember the song or hear it playing. Try to pay attention to t he details... the song, the expression on his face, the supporting characters' interaction with him. When you "get it", oh man...
If you're tired of formulaic/generic/typical anime or just want to try something new, this is the one to shoot for. You won't be disappointed.
I hope you get as many laughs out of the comedic parts as I did, and If you've watched the show, now you understand the summary.-
