This show, especially for the majority of the first half, tries to put our two main characters, the shy and soft-spoken Aharen-san and the ever-neutral Raido-kun, in situations where a lack of communication leads to wacky misunderstandings that ultimately result in nothing. They beat this one type of joke OVER and OVER for nearly the entire season, probably up through episode 11. There is no other humor in this show. The comedy in this show beats a dead horse for well over 3 hours of pathetically lazy content, and I was essentially in a full hate-watch by episode 3.
The romance in this show was somehow better than the comedy, despite there being almost none of it throughout the show. Romantic “progression” for the first half of the show is basically Aharen-san blushing when one of the failed comedic bits puts them physically close to each other. The show wants you to be entertained by the comedy for the first nine episodes of the show, which should be impossible for anyone with any sort of functioning sense of humor. Episode 10 brought the first romantic moment through the camping episode, and it would have been really nice had it felt earned by the first 75% of the show. The ending capped the romance off in a nice way but spent half of the finale on a character that wasn’t our lead! Ooshiro-san, along with every single minor character (more on that in a minute) had no reason to be anywhere near this show. So yeah, the romance had solid execution, but the rest of the show was such a let-down that it was all for naught.
I’ve never seen a cast of characters this bad… and my last review was Shield Hero, which should tell you something. The show gives 0 fucks about making you like any of them, even our main two. Here’s my description of the characters in the most honest way I can portray them:
Raido-kun: Big imagination, little interest.
Aharen-san: Little girl, little voice, little effort.
Ooshiro-san: Big girl, little voice, zero effort, plot device.
Satou-san and Ishikawa-san: They’re in the same class, right? Why do I care?
Toubaru-sensei: How many times can my nose bleed before this joke gets old? The answer is 1.
The children: Where the fuck are their parents?
Aharen siblings: They’re like Aharen, but different!
If you liked this show, I’m sorry. Not sorry that I didn’t like it or spent this review talking about why your opinion is ridiculous, I’m sorry for you. If you like this style of attempted humor but want something worth watching, try Nichijou. Hell, even Gamers does a similar style, and while that show is pretty mediocre, it beats this out in a landslide. If you want something with better romance, try Tsurezure Children- it’s cuter, funnier, and gives so much more enjoyment despite being half the runtime of this atrocity. Should anyone watch this show? Hell no.
