“Being able to spring into action when called upon or not… The ones who can do that… are beautiful.” - Miyuki ShiroganeThat quote has stuck with me when I watched this series. I almost forgot how deep and dramatic this series can be when I started watching season 3 until he said that. I realized that this anime wasn’t a romcom again, I was reminded that this was a powerful and deep show that happens to be a romcom. Season 1 had its powerful moments with “I can’t hear the fireworks” and season 2 had arguably the most sad moment in the entire series with Ishigami. After hearing that quote and finishing the series, I can honestly say the series is one of my favorite shows of all time. Even though I am up to date on the manga, I did not expect the series to be like this. When I first started to watch this series, I expected it to be a silly romcom with not much deep story into it, but I found myself incredibly invested in the entire series. The characters, the story, the comedy and so much more. And here are my thoughts. If you haven’t seen the series it all, or season 3, read at your own risk.
Starting off, we have the characters. Miyuki Shirogane and Kaguya Shinomiya’s chemistry with each other is as great as always, still trying to manipulate each other to confess, because after all, love is war. However, if they were to stop doing that, the writing and comedy would die off though, right? Nope. I will get back into that later. Ishigami, God bless him, is as great as ever, with his chemistry with Shirogane to be a wonderful thing to see, his friendship with Shinomiya to be blossoming is as wholesome as ever, and his relation with Miko Iino is hilarious. All of these characters and the chemistry they have with one another is what makes this series work. Because of the characters, and the writing, whenever they become funny and relatable, we grow an attachment to said characters, which is why whenever they go through a painful moment, we feel for them and we get emotional as a viewer ourselves. This is why season 2 episode 11 was absolutely heartbreaking, and why we will get incredibly emotional at some point in season 4 (as a manga reader, I won’t spoil, but damn it, you will feel hurt). The characters is the core to this brilliant series emotionally and comedically.
Story wise, I think season 3 is great. Season 3 has a major reveal with Shirogane going to skip a year to study abroad, has made me feel incredibly invested in the limited time they have now. That single reveal will make everything feel more emotional when the series progresses over the coming seasons, causing us to wonder what will happen after that and the build up to his departure? This has essentially made both Kaguya and Miyuki the need to confess to each other, now knowing that their time is limited. From the moment that reveal is stated, we are invested and waiting to see who will be the “loser” in this battle. The season finale feels so good to watch due to what they did to each other when they realized their time was extremely limited. I have been invested in the whole story since season 1, and they haven’t disappointed me at all. Now people do wonder what is next after season 3, and to that I say, well you have Ishigami and the whole time between now and Shirogane’s departure to see the characters grow and still give hilarious moments for us to watch. You’re in for a wild ride.
This was one of my shorter reviews, I have a lot more to say, but that would require full spoilers and probably a 1 hour YouTube video of me talking about it, but we don’t have all day. So yeah, Kaguya-Sama is one of the best rom coms out there, and in my opinion, one of my personal favorite shows of all time. I am giving Kaguya-Sama: Love is War -Ultra Romantic- a really big 9.5/10. Truly a fantastic series.
Side note, the English Dub is funnier because of the narrator. Fight me.
Another side note, The opening is amazing, as always
