"Bad writing is masked by great production" is the definition for this show.
When I watched the first Vivy 2 episodes I feel it's great. The design of the sci-fi world that is rare in anime and the heroine's character design like Vivy is awesome, reminds me of Violet Evergarden. But after that, the story wasn't that good at all.
Vivy's writing is filled with plot holes and sick logic of the characters. There are various crazy concepts such as Humans marry AI?, AI kills themselves? AI takes over the world? Of course, if you don't think about it, it will be normal. But if you think about it, this idea is very [redacted]. Every time I see humans in this story, I tend to think that they have no brains and deserve to be destroyed by their own AI.
Good world design turned out to be a major weakness because the story never explored the setting within the world. We don't even understand what the real state of society would be like when it came to the era when humans created AI to work for themselves. Therefore, there are many questions that cannot be explained rationally.
The plot is divided into arcs. In each arc there are about 2 to 3 chapters telling the main character in that arc. But the narrative is so rushed every now and then that all the characters are cut off so quickly and you'll forget about them at the end of the episode.
Vivy is the character that the show tries to develop the most by injecting depth into her. Vivy is similar to Violet. Evergarden, her goal is to find meaning. "Filling people's hearts" and she evolved as the show progressed and in the end she finally got the answer. That's what people hailed as a great show, but nevertheless for me Vivy's development was just boring writing and full of unreasonable logic. I won't go into details, but I believe many people who don't like it will think the same as me.
I'm not going to mention the other characters that appear in each arc, because they're just characters that pass through nothing special and are eventually forgotten. Only Matsumoto is the main character alongside Vivy, but he's just an annoying plot device and makes the show even more tedious because his job is to explain everything perfectly. Forces the audience with very annoying voice acting.
(I don't mean that the voice actors act badly, but I mean the role of Matsumoto.)
The art and animation are excellent though. But the production quality is not consistent. There are many scenes where the art is dull and mediocre and will always be great in action scenes.
The music is really great. But it often forces audiences to engage in drama scenes with tragic compositions, and of course it does well despite the poor writing.
I don't recommend that you watch this show if you want a sensible and deep story. But if you want great art and brain-free fun. I would highly recommend it, but for me, I hate this show because it's too stupid for me to enjoy its stupidity.
(Additional: The ending was terrible. Very predictable, extremely rushed, stupid and boring.)
