For a while now I have been on the hunt for a great hurt/comfort anime, and this one was hitting all the marks that I was looking for right up until the end.
I was expecting a lot from the beginning when I first heard about this anime, it takes some guts to portray the types of things that CloverWorks aimed to show here,
It started off well for them too, the animation was very pleasing to watch, the characters had varied, and endearing, personalities, and the plot had huge potential. Needless to say, I found myself hooked within the first few episodes, however, just as quickly as it built up the tension, it fell.
It was going really well until I reached the recap episode, which threw me off since you don't typically see, or need, a recap while watching a 12 episode long anime, and giving Wonder Egg Priority one hurt it more than it helped. The placement of it felt random and caused me to lose focus on the plot, making the last few episodes less enjoyable. Additionally, there hadn't been enough going on in the anime for me to forget many of the details. Especially since I had the ability to sit down and watch it in one go, as I assume is the way that most people watched it.
From there it was all downhill, the ending felt slightly more rushed than it needed to be and a lot of the themes that they could have gone further into were just dropped, some of which I felt should have just been left out since they didn't.
In the end, it did become a show that I enjoyed watching, however, I feel as though it should have been put on hold instead of rushing to complete it, giving time to complete it in a way that felt natural and finished, not leaving as much potential behind. I hope that someday this anime gets developed further, since it had so much potential to inspire some other animes if it had been pulled off better.
I would recommend Wonder Egg Priority, despite the flaws I think that it is a good anime, just barely falling short of a great one.
