Before I begin this I'd like to give a score to RE:Zero. It is a 5/10 anime, where the points I give it above 1/10 are exclusively for English voice acting, sound direction and sound design.
Animation is weak, low quality work, you would often find independent solo animators on YouTube doing a considerably better job, but as per industry standard a lot of viewers would think it is acceptable.
Plot line is a shallow Isekai due to characters lacking real development or depth to them. Protagonist is surrounded by a cast of cliche supporting characters who are just "yes men/women" to him and even if they show any resistance to his ideas or plans it is surface level and they are very quick to turn their fundamental believes completely for his benefit.
RE:Zero has pretty much the worst and most idiotic dialogue I have ever heard, at times it almost seems that Subaru tries to be a meta subversive troll and says some of the things he says on purpose in order to make the viewer cringe or become absolutely disinterested in what he has to say. Humour is also non existent, out of 10 jokes show tries to pull off only 1 on average would have any comedic value to it.
Now I would like to get to the positives which actually made me watch the show till the end and enjoy what I viewed.
English voice acting is straight up best in any animation I have ever seen. I score it 10/10, actors manage to pull off any idiotic lines with incredible conviction, tempo and feelings. Every character feels very unique and recognisable in how they talk, voices are vivid and alive. Betelgeuse voice acting deserves a separate reward due to how complex and interesting the role is in itself, which took about 5-7 actors to voice, who did their job perfectly. For the reference I have checked out original voice over and it was very generic, Japanese voice actors speak like npc robots devoid of any emotion while being completely undistinguishable from one another, avoid Japanese voice over in favour of beyond brilliant English one.
I found myself in most peculiar state where I absolutely hated the dialogue, the stupidest things were being said out of what I have heard in my life and yet I could not possibly turn it off or stop watching because actors absolutely captivated me and I was putting my heart into the characters as they did it.
Not only the voice acting, but overall choices of music, percussion are a super strong work and they accomplish creating incredible atmosphere and some epic scenes, i.e. introduction of witch of greed is one the best scenes in the anime period due to music there.
I have to praise how RE:ZERO during first few episodes went towards a path where Subaru only faced desperation in a cruel fantasy world, and at times anime does a great job of maintaining that atmosphere of desperation, but unfortunately as it is very poorly written it does not manage to keep the viewer tense, because they know pieces will fall into the place or another idiotic sentence uttered by doll characters will turn you off from taking it seriously.
Overall I do not recommend to watch RE:ZERO, its just a weak work with little artistic value to it, read a better manga instead of being in this drag for a while. However, if you want to witness a voice acting and sound design masterpiece you should absolutely watch it, you will never encounter anything like that again.
