I went into Oyasumi Pun Pun blind, expecting it to be a typical coming-of-age story. However, I was completely blown away by what I read. From the very beginning, I was drawn in by the relatable and lovable main character, Punpun, and his innocent crush on Aiko. As the story progressed, I found myself rooting for Punpun and Aiko to end up together, and I was genuinely invested in their relationship. However, as the series delved deeper into the complexities of Punpun's home life and the struggles he faced at school, my heart began to break for him. The portrayal of Punpun's abusive and neglectful parents was heart-wrenching, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of sadness and frustration for him as he struggled to cope with the trauma of witnessing domestic violence and experiencing emotional and physical neglect. The way the story depicted the impact of abuse and neglect on a child's emotional and psychological development was particularly moving, and it left a lasting impression on me.
This manga was full of heavy themes and emotional turmoil, it kept me hooked. even with that there was an underlying sense of hope and optimism made me keep rooting for Punpun as he tried to overcome his struggles and find happiness, even though the ending wasn't quite what I had hoped for. Despite experiencing a lot of pain and trauma in his life, Punpun was able to move on from the loss of Aiko and continue to grow and progress. This resilience and strength in the face of adversity is truly something to behold. However, Aiko's demisse was a heartbreaking moment that left me feeling a sense of broken hope, a feeling that felt all too natural given that things like this do happen in real life. Even though bad things like this happen, it's important to pick yourself back up and strive for a better life moving forward.
The characters in the series are also incredibly written, Punpun's uncle is a really amazing one, who was a source of support and guidance for him, despite his own flaws and we even get to follow him through his own struggles.
Aiko was a bright and ambitious young woman, full of hope and determination despite the challenges she faced. Aiko's relationship with Punpun was complex and layered, and it was clear that they cared deeply for each other. However, their relationship was also tumultuous at times, and they struggled to communicate and understand each other's needs.
Shimizu is the cheerful one of the group, always trying to see the good in things. He struggles with hallucinations, but he tries to stay positive and support his friends. Masumi is more rough around the edges, with a complex personality and deep-seated issues. He's philosophical and introspective, but also rough and tough. Sachi is a strong and independent with a fierce dedication to her work as a mangaka and a need to prove herself for her own values. Despite her tough exterior, she is also vulnerable and forms a close bond with Punpun. They all play important roles in the story and I admire that, because they end up being memorable.
Talking about her, we can't deny that Sachi played a significant role in Punpun's life and growth, and while the ending didn't explicitly declare the status of their relationship, it clear to me that she was an important part of Punpun's journey in the past and probably in the future. However, the focus of the ending was ultimately on Punpun's ability to move forward and find purpose in spite of his past struggles. It was satisfying to see him finally make progress and begin to heal from the traumas he had experienced. The ending left me hopeful for Punpun's future and reminded me of the importance of resilience and perseverance in the face of adversity.

Overall, this manga had a big impact on me, I can put it up there with Clannad and NHK ni Youkoso.
It touched on themes of love, family, and identity in a way that was both poignant and heart-wrenching, and even though the ending left me feeling a sense of broken hope, I couldn't help but appreciate the way it reflected the often unpredictable and bittersweet nature of life. This is a manga series that I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a thought-provoking and emotionally charged read. It may not always be an easy read, but it is definitely worth it for the deep and complex characters, the powerful themes, and the heart-wrenching emotional journey.
