Okay, to start off. I watched this for three reasons.
One, a good friend of mine really enjoyed it and said it was super cute.
Two, I'm honestly probably kinda similar to Komi...~ Though, that may very well be the reason many watched it, to be honest...~
And three, ~~saving the stupidest for last,~~ is Tadano's VA and finding out he apparently sings at one point. Yeah I'm weird but shrug
Anyway, that out of the way... how good is it at what it aims to be? Well...
Fun:
As a comedy, it has to be fun, right?
Yup. And it's really funny~ The first episode had me laughing so damn hard through like the first half (and just squeeing about cute fluffy romance later that episode, so it fulfils its goal perfectly already~)
All throughout it's at least reasonably funny through the honestly quite absurd shenanigans that happen~ It's either that sort of comedy or it's just cuteness~ Or both~
...Or episode 4 after the pink-haired girl's section ends. I'll touch on that later.
Speaking of which, the pink-haired girl's sections are also highlights of the fun factor~
The biggest problem with the fun factor is definitely that some characters just aren't that funny...~
Speaking of which...
Characters:
In such character-focused comedy story... most of what can be done is talk about how funny the characters are right?
They're either funny or not funny, no in-between. But to go into more depth...
First off, the main character – who is definitely kinda similar to me – Komi. She's just so cute~ A cute and pretty girl who is... I guess kinda relatable~? ~~*I barely go outside though so dunno for sure.*~~ That makes a good lead~
In short, cute and funny.
As for Tadano? Yes, one who tried to be really edgy in middle school ~~(Chuunibyou!)~~ and is really kind and supportive... instantly my favourite from episode one, no question~ And episode 5 just cemented that, with the full backstory...~
Najimi... they're an example of an energetic/talkative character who's actually funny and not annoying~ I think it's when comedy is the primary focus of the story, that those characters can be actually funny...~
Either that or the ones which aren't primarily comedy just can't write consistently funny bubbly characters.
In short, they're fun~ Kinda reminds me a bit of Ritsu from K-On, from time to time...~
Agari... isn't particularly funny. She's only memorable 'cause of how much she shows up and her dog shtick.
Makeru, the pink haired girl... as I mentioned before, she is definitely one of the funnier ones, but she barely shows up, unfortunately.
Then we have the true Chuunibyou~ Omoharu is fun and perfect and lonely Chuunibyou is just kyaaahh–
Netsuno, Otori and Onemine who?
And of course, saving the hated for last, Yamai. The generally hated girl by the fans ~~who somehow has over a 100 favourites.~~
The drama she caused just felt... really out of place and... yeah it's not that I hate her, it's just the plot of most of episode 4 felt really jarring because of her. I mean, the rest's all cute and fluffy and funny but then sudden – and honestly quite shallow – drama happens there and it just... it just feels weird and... I didn't feel any strong emotions about it.
She's also not really that funny afterwards.
Overall:
While the characters each have varying levels of funniness, it's nonetheless consistently a reasonably fun and cute show overall~
'Cause some characters just aren't funny, though, I don't give it an especially high score, but nonetheless it is certainly a fun watch, worth at least some of the praise it receives~ Perhaps the second part improves on that, but for now...
So, in conclusion, a good show when looking for something fun and cute~
