Let me preface this review by saying: Normally, I am not the type of person to write reviews on anything. However, I will need to make an exception for this one, since I still cannot get this series out of my head and I will not be able to put my mind at ease before I express my thoughts about this anime in full length. Feel free to interpret this review as a coping mechanism of sorts. Anyway.
Wonder Egg Priority is about a group of girls who each have very different personalities, very different personal issues and come from very different walks of life. The protagonist is Ai Ohto, a girl who is bullied at school due to her heterochromia. With the death of her only friend, she loses the only thing that made her life worth living, and so she becomes a shut-in. However, then a chance itself to her that gives her life a new purpose. We are then taken on a journey that sees Ai and the people she meets, who are on a similar quest, try dealing with their issues and kick a decently large amount of monster butt.
At the beginning, I really loved this anime. It deals with some sensitive topics in a way that I've never really seen before (which is a statement that doesn't really carry any weight coming from someone like me, who doesn't really consume media in a genre like this). The stories of every single one of the characters really touched me deeply, and I even found myself relating to some.
Unfortunately, this is where my praise ends. Somehow, nearing the end, this anime managed to do a complete 180° turn. For the worse. It started incorporating some really weird Lain-ish elements that feel extremely out of place and are never really explained, at least as far as I can remember and the ending raises more questions than it answers.
The following is an explanation of what exactly was wrong, however it will unfortunately contain spoilers.
All in all, this show could be described as a nice car that suddenly hit a wall at 200km/h and is messed up beyond repair. Were it not for the nonsense thrown in towards the end, this would without a doubt be my favorite anime. I'd really love to recommend this to other people, but it really pains me that I can't.
I still think about this anime a lot and wonder just what could have been.
