Let me begin this review with this: If you were actively watching anime during the Fall 2022 season and you missed “Chainsaw Man”, you are either living under a rock or... Well, you’re most certainly living under a rock. That is to say that “Chainsaw Man” (in the following shortened with “CSM”) gathered a huge following, rarely seen before, but deservedly so?
I should start by stating that I like REALLY liked the show but I am not sure that a show getting hyped up by an amount as we saw it here is ever deserved as I feel like there is nothing such as a perfect, flawless anime which I feel like such a massive following sort of implies to the few people that have not seen the show themselves which may in turn lead to disappointment when they finally decide to see for themselves. But enough of that, you’re here to find out what I liked and didn’t like in CSM, right?
Visuals and Sound were cool. Especially the opening being a huge collaborative effort, mixing honestly quite different styles together seamlessly, as well as incorporating some pretty smart references to pop-culture was a banger. Endings? Some were really cool, others have to be content with being called “alright” by yours truly.
Now the story or rather the way it plays out is where I see the biggest weakness here although I can definitely see why the creators did what they did. Overall, I liked the theme, the plot-twists (although sometimes seemingly pulled out of the ass) and the characters but man that pacing felt like one hell of a rollercoaster. There are intense scenarios that span over multiple episodes, in other episodes literally NOTHING happens until maybe the VERY END just so you can cram a shit ton of action into the next episode. I get it, a burst of intensity out of nowhere is cool but I feel like you can also overdo it.
Another thing I have a hard time fully enjoying are some unresolved. We know that Denji is basically unkillable so him not dying is alright but what about Makima? Are they really letting us wait until a continuation eventually drops until we find out how and why the fuck... everything? Don’t get me wrong, speculation can help keep the interest in the series alive, but they didn’t even try to begin explaining some stuff.
But enough rambling, I need to drink my calming tea before it cools down too much (and before I randomly decide to lower the rating I gave this awesome show!)
I'll be back for more questionable and controversial anime reviews, someday...
