Konosuba is one of those shows you're not meant to take seriously and something you put on to shut your brain off to. With a bare-minimum plot and one-dimensional characters it feels like fodder to bank off the success of Sword Art Online.
Something something "demon lord". I'm gonna be honest, the plot of this show evades me. There's few moments where anything that furthers it happens, and it usually gets overshadowed by whatever whacky situations the charcters are put in. Which leads me to point 2
Painfully one-dimensional, any substance of these characters come from following basic archetypes without really adding much to it. All of their personalities can be described with two words. I.e. Perverted idiot, broke idiot, shy masochist and the chuunibyou. They don't develop much past that.
Design-wise they all follow the same "appeal to as many horny men as possible" with having the average skinny girl, the pedo-bait, the big titty waifu. Kazuma is bare-bones MC that has no substance to his design. The only credit i can give them is that they're iconic and recognizable. But in my opinion certain aspects are kind of hideous (like did Aqua seriously have to have four different shades of blue in her design?).
Konosuba's main selling point in the anime community was it's humour, and because of this i feel cheated out of my time. There's some funny moments here and there, but they get a chuckle at most. After that they become dry and repetitive. If there's anything i hate more than dry boring humour though it's the random moaning and "KYAA PERVERT >/////<" stuff this show pulls off, with zero effort or thought put into it.
I don't care if this makes me a "sensitive litttle snowflake" but episode 9 is one of the few times where an anime has made me so viscerally uncomfortable where it felt like a drag to get through it. The bath scene in this episode was so out-of-character of the show and even now after 5 years i have no idea what emotion it was supposed to convey or why it was included. Was it supposed to be erotic? Or funny? Or was it actually made to be uncomfortable? I doubt they did it in purpose considering they dismiss it as "Darkness is just silly and dumb haha". I deal with the copious amounts of sexual harassment for humour's sake in this show, but the way this scene is framed makes it seem we're meant to feel grossed out. Yet there's still jokes being cracked during it. And the way Darkness is treated during it is so odd. Like she wants it but her body language says she doesn't?? What was the point of this scene?? And why did Darkness get blamed for it happening after-the-fact???
In conclusion, the fact that this franchise gets so much praise is beyond me. I get that it's supposed to be a parody but it doesn't even do that well. It almost feels like that's the excuse used to justify this show's popularity. The fact this has such high ratings and praise only further proves my theory that people who only consume anime have no media literacy whatsoever.
