I will start off by saying that I did not go into watching this show with the intent to really... well, I guess enjoy it as I typically aim to with a new series. I watched it because I saw some hubbub about the censorship in the Crunchyroll versions, and general musings about the show's premise, and since I had just ended another show, I thought, screw it, let's check it out for myself and see if it's as people were saying. So I went in with pretty much 0 expectation of anything.
With that premise set, I have to say that I actually ended up liking the show. I respect other people's opinions on it, but I personally am not really bothered by the general premise of it -- otaku shut-in gets turned into a girl and is pushed into interactions by his older sister. Seems rather amusing to me. And indeed, I think it more or less delivered in being somewhat amusing, while also displaying a good progression of Mahiro from the start, just figuring out the "girl stuff", to finish, where he's made a solid group of friends and understandably decides to continue on as his girl self. Admittedly, that decision did sort of trip me out, I couldn't quite tell if they were going to go for a dramatic reveal to finish off the show, or the ending it ended up being. It seems like a straight forward choice given the context, but I was getting heavy foreshadowing vibes from Momiji's "squidgy" statements. I guess I should have figured they wouldn't derail it like that so close to the end though.
As far as the OP goes, I initially skipped over it but found it kind of catchy & enjoyable. The opening images within it though certainly don't do the show any favors with regards to its exterior appearance. I consider myself relatively thick-skinned when it comes to this type of thing, but even I noted it as kind of uncomfortable. ED was also good. I have to say that I didn't really notice the soundtrack all that much, but I think in its own way, that's a good thing -- if it's enhancing the scene and/or affecting the emotion, but in a way that I'm not consciously going "oh look happy/sad/whatever music", it's probably doing its job well! Finally, I enjoyed the animation, thought it was certainly sufficient for the style of show.
All of this being said, I'm not going to lie -- it is kind of weird at times! Again, a lot of it did not particularly bother me, but there are points where certain lewd things or discussions are going on and I'm just sitting there thinking like... these are supposed to be middle schoolers. It's definitely kind of sus in that regard. I think there are certain aspects of it that obviously go along with the general plot line, but... I don't know. If they were trying to go for fanservice in some way, sure I guess, but it DEFINITELY alienates more casual viewers and, to be honest, to not an incredible amount of benefit.
The scenes that were the subjects of a lot of the hubbub around censorship though, I honestly didn't really find them to be anything overly crazy? Like, I understand why it was done, as much as I generally disagree (I like things as close to the source material as possible, and I think it's a problem the community had to figure it out -- it comes off as "we don't think you can handle seeing this, AND we're going to hide that fact from you"), but I think it was kind of overblown and the scenes were not really a big deal. I saw a lot of sentiment that this was lolicon bait or something like that, and for me I just don't see it that way.
Overall, I rate things on a x/5 scale. My personal rating for this is a 4/5 (mapped to 80/100), with 4 generally meaning that I liked it, I actually watched it (didn't relegate it to being in the background, didn't space out watching it, didn't fall asleep), I may or may not rewatch it, and I could recommend it to someone if I was aware of their preferences and thought they'd like it. Big emphasis on that last part, though, because I do acknowledge that a lot of casual viewers will find it weird and I'm not in the business of recommending things like that to just anyone. It would have to have either made me more upset story wise, or bored me more to have pushed it down to a 3, but it certainly didn't rise to the level of a 5, which usually are shows that I am enjoying so much that I'm actively wanting to watch the next episode of ASAP. I did keep up with this one, but I also was perfectly OK if I couldn't get to watching the next episode for a minute, and I rarely watched more than an episode a sitting (I was trailing the releases by a few episodes or so at the start).
I will give one shout out to the scene in episode 9 with Mahiro and Momiji taking selfies. It's often hard for shows to trigger emotions in me, but something about that scene did have me smiling like a goof. A lot of times a show's ability to do that can push it to a 5 for me, but just this one occasion wasn't enough here.
