Mushoku Tensei feels like a dungeons and dragons campaign with random side quests one after another and the occasional hint toward some greater overarching plot that never happens.
Animation [6/10]
The animation is great at best and bad at worst. Having heard and seen great examples of the amazingly well animated magic scenes I went in to this expecting to see mediocre isekai with the occasional cool scene. Initially this was the case, but as the "story" progressed the cool scenes became less and less frequent until the last episode when they were completely gone. The action scenes grow sloppier and sloppier towards the end where they ultimately look like they had a tenth of the budget of the early episodes.
Setting [2/10]
Mushoku Tensei brings nothing new to the table in terms of setting. It is the standard magic and swordfighting in medieval totally-not-europe, complete with spoken and written languages and unpronounceable names. Each time one of the made up language is spoken I had to turn down the volume as not to be isekai'd myself from the sheer second hand embarrassment I felt for the voice actors.
Plot [3/10]
The plot of Mushoku Tensei is incoherent and messy. The characters' motivation is unclear and vague, the story is driven forward by seemingly random events with little to no foreshadowing, the conflicts are simple and one dimensional, and the plot exists in a strange middle ground between entirely predictable and entirely unpredictable. The start the show is apparently about a pervy kid whose motivation is to learn magic, and the final episode is about how a random guy tries to correct his bad reputation by strangling a horse and running away.
The green haired Sperds that Rudeus is warned to avoid at all costs turn out to be nice guys, the "kidnapping" episode ends with the kidnapping actually being real and Rudeus saving the day, the dance episode ends with Rudeus and Eris dancing together. In short, the short story arcs have all been done an uncountable number of times before.
On the other hand the story is illogical and strange. The plot goes from revolving a horny kid to a random green haired guy strangling a horse. The character's motivation have no coherency and seem to be little more than to do whatever will keep the story progressing. After being transported (?) far away, Rudeus and Eris are less concerned with getting home than they are with finding a missing cat. When their friend is killed before their eyes, the people in the other party are more concerned with Rudeus and the green haired guy's argument than with being in shock or grieving. The green haired guy's motivation is to clear his clan's name and not hurt kids (conveniently enough), and in spite of this he acts like a psychopath whenever it's convenient for the plot. Philip (Eris' dad) suggests a coup d'état to Rudeus and it is never brought up again, Sylphiette mysteriously has amnesia and it is never explained or even mentioned after the second episode, in episode 8 a random guy is shown looking at a dragon and a toddler in a bikini is laughing and coughing for some reason. While these seemingly arbitrary events ostensibly will lead to something in future seasons, they feel out of place without more context.
Charcters [4/10]
Rudeus [4/10] is an unlikeable little asshole. When he isn't doing magic his entire motivation seems to be sexual in nature, and his creepy manipulation of Paul and the mom seems like a setup for some divine punishment that ultimately never comes. He is inconsistent and annoying. In one scene he walks around the town and forest happily, and in the next he is terrified of leaving the yard. He struggles to learn a language, and suddenly he speaks it fluently.
Eris [4/10] is an unlikeable little asshole. She is mean and violent throughout the majority of her time on the screen, and the few nice moments she have are entirely overshadowed by her annoying attitude.
Paul [5/10] is an unlikeable little asshole. He is explicitly presented as an asshole and nothing is done to redeem him.
Ghislaine [5/10] is a fun character that isn't given any depth beyond having large breasts and being good at fighting.
Sylphiette [2/10] is a token loli side character that does nothing and isn't relevant to anything.
Roxy [5/10] is a fun character on the surface and is never given any deeper characterization than that. After leaving Rudeus she is shown getting sexually harassed every now and then and then she reads a list.
The green haired guy [2/10] Is weird and shallow. His motivation is questionable and his actions are inconsistent.
In summary, not good. If this is considered an exceptionally good isekai anime, one shudders to imagine what the average one is like. 4.5/10, would not recommend.
