I really wanted to like Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan. From what I had seen of the show online, it seemed like it'd be something I really enjoyed-- it has that early 2000's "moe" art style that I'm really fond of, plus the main character is a cute angel girl who carries around a spiked baseball bat. How could I not love it, right?
Honestly, it's on me for not looking more into this show, because I realised pretty early on that this wasn't going to be my thing. For every quality I liked about the show, there was something I disliked that dampened the experience for me.
First off, let me start with the things I liked. As I mentioned before, the artstyle of the show is really appealing to me. It has a lot of elements of the early/mid 2000's style of anime that I find cute and nostalgic. There's some solid jokes and visual gags mixed in sometimes, though I felt there were generally more misses than hits. The voice actors seemed to do a pretty good job, from what I can tell. And the opening is an absolute banger.
But there was a lot I didn't like about the show as well. Something I noticed pretty quickly was that each episode was very fast-paced. This was something I had sort of expected from a 4-episode OVA, but I don't think I was prepared for just how quick it'd be. The show jumps from joke to joke with very little time to process anything, which made me feel kind of overwhelmed while watching. The fast pace feels unwarranted, considering most of the show up until Episode 4 is just slice-of-life slapstick.
Since the show's focus is mainly on humor, there's little to no time spent building any of the characters, which sort of left me disliking all of them. Again, I wasn't expecting anything super deep from a 4-episode OVA, but overall the show has the same runtime as an average feature-length film-- that seems like more than enough time to at least make the characters somewhat likeable. During the show, I found myself going back and forth from thinking "Dokuro is so mean, why does she have to do all that to Sakura," to thinking "Yeah, Sakura's annoying as shit, he deserved that". The lack of any likeable characters left me not feeling any sort of emotion during the show's "emotional" moments. How am I supposed to root for these two to get together when I find both of them annoying?
Another aspect of the show I really could've done without is the constant sexualisation of Dokuro (and Sakura, to a lesser degree). I'm honestly just too fucking jaded at this point to get into lolicon discourse, but even if you somehow choose to ignore the fact that Dokuro is a preteen girl, the show sexualises her so goddamn often that it's actually infuriating. I swear to god, there are probably more tiddy shots in this show then there are instances of Dokuro being genuinely nice to Sakura. You'd have to have your brain absolutely rotted away and actively decomposing to nothingness by porn to not find the constant panty/boob shots in this show annoying. I guess the showrunners probably prioritized this aspect of the show over making the characters tolerable, which is disappointing.
Ultimately, Bokusatsu Tenshi is a mixed bag. The show had potential to be great, but it unfortunately ended up getting overshadowed by all of its faults. I hope that if the showrunners ever decide to reboot or remake it one day (which I know is pretty unlikely, but still), they put more care into the characters and writing. Until then, this will have to be a 5/10 for me.
