Tokyo Revengers was a sloggggg to watch. The plot is incredibly convoluted and the pacing does not match the severity of the situation. It gives off SAO Alfheim Online. Hanagaki HAS to fix the timeline but he never makes a note-worthy move. Takemichi has ZERO character development too. I know he's supposed to be "The Crybaby" but the crybaby trope can only go so far before it gets really, really old. The plot twists make the story even more confusing. I watched this anime up until episode 14 and that's where I really wanted to give up... But, at that point I was already more than halfway through the season. I kept going and hoping that Tokyo Revengers would get good at some point. By the last episode of season one I was screaming at the screen "PLEASE NO, YOU CAN'T STILL BE THIS DUMB". Alas, I was wrong. At least the art style is good.
***SPOILER ALERT: Anilist requires a 2200 character review so I’m going to talk about the end of Tokyo Revengers in this next paragraph.
The title of the last episode is LITERALLY called “A Cry Baby”. Yes, Takemichi is STILL crying. I’m so confused and annoyed as to what part of Takemichi’s personality Mikey likes. He said he likes Takemichi because of his similarity to his brother. But what exactly is Mikey referring too? The crybaby part? Because that is the worst part of Takemichi’s character.
Before Baji died he told Takemichi that “Kisaki is the enemy”. Wouldn’t that mean that Takemichi should tell his captain, Mikey, and Chifuyu what Baji said?? That Kisaki is the enemy?? But Takemichi has zero brain cells and doesn’t say anythingggggg after The Bloody Halloween?? And the meeting at the shrine where Hanma and Mikey merge Toman and Valhalla; the merger was Kisaki’s idea and Takemichi STILL didn’t say anything?? Even Chifuyu stood right next to Mikey to support this decision of the merger and Takemichi just… FORGOT to tell them what Baji said?? This means his death was in vain and it’s a tragedy to lose such a fun, chaotic character who had the best plot twist in this story, be dragged through the mud... The trope of “miscommunication” is done wayyyy too much and so poorly that it’s incredibly aggravating.
Towards the end of the last episode, Takemichi is thrown back into the future and is SOMEHOW a head executive of Toman. The Tokyo Manji Gang has evolved to that of mafia status and they have a web of businesses and connections.
When Takemichi fast forwards into the new future, he can’t even play it cool. He continuously chokes on his tongue at every turn and introduction. Takemichi KNOWS he changed the future somehow, he KNOWS he’s going to be catapulted into a new timeline. And when he is, he’s surprised?? Like, bro, please. Get it togetherrrrr.
The two more devastating developments? Draken is somehow dead and Mikey has disappeared. Can they really be called the Tokyo Manji Gang without Mikey?? At the end of the last episode, Kisaki asks Takemichi and Chifuyu (who is now Takemichi’s right hand) if he can have a word alone with the two of them. One of the last important things that Takemichi learned was that “Kisaki is the enemy”. Does Takemichi have the attention span of a goldfish? Kisaki is the enemy, why does he willingly agree to meet with Kisaki? Why does he accept the drink? I was high key stressed at the last episode. All that wasted time with this 24 episode anime and I’m still begging for it to get better...
