Wonder Egg Priority is a very unique magical girl show. The protagonist is a 14-year old, bullied girl named Ai. The show is about the depth of the darkness in the minds of pure children when they're thrown into the world's dark situations (and it can be.. very dark, pain to the point of s*icide). The good news is that the show does a good job capturing that. The bad news is that it's not any deeper than that, and the writing also feels like it was done by a 14-year old.
Episode 1 is an intro of how dark the show's gonna be- the story's all about death, and friends just literally disappearing is quite common. The rest of the episodes go through the magical journeys that the cast is forced on. I didn't follow every detail of how it worked, but basically, in order to save their dead friends, the magical girls have to buy Wonder Eggs (which hatch new friends) and go on missions through the dream world an indeterminate number of times.
I'll talk about the flaws first, and the good things last.
Most of the characters are shown as very, very unreasonable, and even when their reasons for acting such are shown later, it's still neither cool nor relatable. Ai is an exception, because her perspective is kind of the viewer's perspective, and Momoe is chill too, but besides that.. they all make a nice dynamic, but it would be better with more reasonable & relatable characters.
Each of the girls has their arc, and the conclusion to each arc comes with some moral point that helps them overcome their struggles. Neiru's arc was pretty cool,
but besides that, they aren't really done well.. Momoe might have a gender crisis, but.. that's it. Her arc's conclusion was
Like I said, not terrible but no deeper than the most basic takes a 14-year old might struggle with.
Rika's finale was a lesson on condemning cults, which had nothing to do with her struggle..? And wasn't built up to.. And half of Ai's struggles was just her suspecting a man who she had no reason to suspect or be bothered by, which she admitted and wasn't even a bitch about (just everyone else was).
The closest thing here to a decent villain is Acca and Ura-Acca, and even in the end, neither of them are cool or have any appeal.
The laughing mosquito-head girl made no sense and was nothing more than the 'creepy messed up villain who laughs evilly at bad things' generic archetype. I don't even remember if it was Dot or Kirara Rodriguez Matured XVIII Evening Star SS Plum (/srs), but I don't exactly care.
Also,
You can't talk about a possibility for a few episodes and then have it literally happen right after in a show this short. It's only impact was the surprise element when you first see him in bad form.
Also, speaking of their bad forms, every single enemy design was disgusting. I understand it's trying to capture the depths of the darkness of a pure girl's mind, but it could've at least made them surreal instead of disgusting..
And the implication that Ai killed herself in order to remain pure forever was.. interesting?
Episode 1 is very dark, and the contrast between that and the more lighthearted episodes after, makes you think that surely something bad's gonna happen soon.... and then
but like everything else, it's arbitrary.
Frill was an interesting premise, and it was executed well, but it didn't feel like it had any relevance to the main characters' lives or the main story, even if it somehow connected.
The special episode is pretty interesting, it's fun but an even more disrespectful ending than this is lmao
So, if it fails in so many ways, why is it not rated lower?
IT'S CATCHY.
Everything about it is catchy. The music, the animation, etc. The characters may not be the best-written but they're fun.
The ost is genuinely one of the best I have ever heard; it's creative and unique and both calming and unsettling, like take this for example:

Of course, there are more normal tracks, but it's all really good.
The voice acting was nice, in Japanese but also in English: I mostly watched it in English and Ai's va sounded chill, and the translations for Rika's pop-slang were done well ("no cap", "slay").
The animation is great and cute and most of all expressive, almost Ghibli-level:

And the opening and ending are to die for. The opening is neat because you get to the part where the drop hits but the visuals are just Ai and friends slowly walking, living their life, and it hits all the cold soothing points in my mind.
And the ending hits them even better:

In short, the show kinda sucks BUT I would still watch every episode if there were hundreds :( not sure how to rate that but 40 sounds right?
Feel free to message me about anything I wrote ^^
