~~~Scott Pilgrim just got a new anime adaptation and boy is it a doozy. It is pretty good and here are my thoughts.
The only thing I've seen from the franchise before was the movie made in 2010, the one with Michael Cera in the main role. It is a very well made movie, it's funny and the action is fun, with colorful and energetic visuals sure to entertain.
The only problem with the movie was how 2010's era nerds co-opted the movie and made it into the most cringe-tastic thing ever. It's all fun and games until the computer science demographic sees himself as the main character. That is fact. So going in I had very low expectations, expecting this to just be another fun romp wasted on fueling the ego of the peanut gallery of dorks making snide comments on onlyfans pages. Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised.
The quality of the animation was superb. The art style of the original comics translated super well into an animated format, with great character designs and animation all throughout. Especially during the action scenes, shit looked tight. Speaking of which, they did not disappoint with all of the goofy action and characters shining through a myriad of clever fights. It manages to be different from both the film and the comic, with a new take on this series with the same characters and setup as the original. At the same time, it didn't take any cheap shots at the original show, it was tastefully written with respect.
So what went right?
It seems as though the team behind the show got the movie or the comic mansplained to them sometime during development and they made a conscientious decision to not appeal to that lowest common denominator. All of this is to say that there is no way some dork could go "that's literally me" and then try to date a 17 year old. Since that was my only problem with the source material, that makes this adaptation a swag show.
Also, props to being the only show I know to reference the best version of Dr. Robotnik (Long John Baldry from AOSTH, of course), even if tangentially.
Happy thanksgiving to all who celebrate. Stay frosty.
