The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You
An honest review of a dishonest manga
In light of the recent anime adaptation that this series has been "blessed with", I have taken my time to put to words what exactly has caused me to develop such uneasy feelings towards this work loved by many.
The premise of "The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You" is that God made a typo when ordering the MC's girlfriend count. Unable to fix it (omnipotent my ass), the MC is now destined to have 100 female relationships, with each female in danger of dying if the MC fails the relationship with her. God tries to make it sound better by saying that only girls fall in love at first sight, which is extremely biased and unrealistic to say the least.
Overall this feels very forced, especially when you consider the fact that the girlfriends could have gone on with their daily lives and get engaged with a guy that matches themself and their respective personality, yet they are instead brainwashed upon sight into loving the same guy with countless "extras", talk about a terrifying reality fit for a horror movie. The girls got the bad ending in life, the one where they have to either form a bond with the dude or perish. Or rather, they can't even choose the latter, they never had a choice to begin with....
Brushing it off as a comedy not supposed to be taken seriously could not be more outlandish, how can someone possibly ignore the factors behind the romantic relationships in a romance anime??
The character arcs for each girlfriend are usually intriguing and deep and the girlfriends themselves are really enjoyable with their own respective quirks. However they end up forgotten and without enough time to sink in for good as the next girlfriend in line appears and the previous ones become a shell of their former glory. This will for sure become apparent as the series progresses more and more.
Personally, I dropped the manga after the mother of one of the girlfriends, who had an interesting thing going for her about not letting her daughter be in a relationship because she herself was a victim of premature love, just fell in love with the MC through eye contact. The "dream" the MC has where he meets the mother's late lover (who was supposed to love the mother A LOT before passing away) just up and told the MC that he accepts him as her new lover and asked him to take care of the mother and daughter for him was the final straw, it screamed cuckoldry and disrespect towards to poor guy, even if the MC loves all his girlfriends equally.
Overall, The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You is a manga that carries a very unique concept, one however that comes with a lot of problems that it unfortunantely didn't manage to properly handle.
