Understanding that others have many different things going on in their own life is a great message, but what isn't is stalking someone and getting away with it just because you have the power to turn into a cat when you do it. The main character is a creep and very perverse; she turns into a cat to spend time with her crush and in doing so she fantasizes her time with him and perversely looks forward to seeing him every night. Her having problems at home and with family is a good story piece but using that as a reason to justify stalking and harassing her crush is disgusting to me.
Her crush on the other hand is a much more interesting character in the film; he's getting good grades and can be applied to a high school while also dealing with his dog's and father's death and his families business needing to be shut down. Kento making pottery with his grandfather and enjoying it is a great way to express his characters feelings especially since expressing himself is what he looks down on himself for not being able to do. Sadly they don't do anything about this and never conclude or act on how he feels and the character never gets any motivation to to take a step up like he wanted.
I think this could have been played out much better if the cat thing wasn't here while also not having the main protagonist as a creep. It seriously has the potential to be great but "cute cat girl" probably sells more. I really couldn't see anything Miyo did as cute or just playful; she has walked into her crushes home, always gets nosey about his personal matters, and constantly physically harasses him at school so much so that when it doesn't happen it's surprising. The worst part is that she gets away with the former two because she's a cat while doing it. If you have the mind of a human, which she did, then this does NOT excuse these actions, but the film does and that's why I didn't have as much fun with this as I thought.
As for the things I did like, well the animation was great and so was the voice acting; Johnny Yong Bosch pulls off another great character although personally I think his best characters are like his role here, a normal human. Everyone else was great too. I liked Kaoru's relationship with her cat and how Kinako realized she was missed more as a cat than human. I enjoyed Miyo's best friend and how she genuinely cared for her and didn't want to see her emotionally hurt, even if she was a generic character. I also liked the adults in the film, not because I relate to them but because they also had to handle a lot of weight on their shoulders. In fact everything that's affected the main characters is caused by them; a mother abandoning her daughter and trying to get her back without being kind or motherly, and a father that dies and a business run by a grandfather needing to be shut down because of his health.
