When thinking about losers in anime, there are so many faces that flash through my mind. Many of them were narrowly defeated after a close battle against one, two, three, four, or 100 competitors. However, they have surely earned enough of their fanbase and become the topic of discussion in the anime community. This time, Make Heroine ga Oosugiru! (Makeine) makes good use of the losers in a high school rom com, putting them in the spotlight.
There are many to appraise on Makeine, as it started off very well, presenting a speciality of adaptation by the production team. Since the beginning, the anime has been filled with exaggerated yet hilarious occasions, which mostly happen to the female main characters, Yanami Anna. What makes the depiction of comedy work out is that the man of the show was set to be an ordinary high school student who merely indulges in light novels and has no acquaintances but a bro-con sister, Kazuhiko Nukumizu. Although being a loner, Nukumizu was normally good enough to be an emotional intelligent and stable individual that does not seem to act edgily in front of others, instead holding an ideal perspective towards different occasions.
The life of the ordinary loner about to turn into intricacy when he encountered the first relationship Shuraba, 修羅場 of the show in that café when Yanami becomes the first loser heroine, it then followed by Lemon and Komari. In this case, the character design is so outstanding that it is always a pleasure to behold how the sensible and blunt Nukumizu responds to all these brutal rejections that came out of nowhere. During the episodes portraying Yanami and Lemon, personally, I think Nukumizu was more of an observer who barely involved in romantic complexity because the author put him in that position. Not to mention that he had done pretty well in response to lending a hand to Yanami and Lemon.
The real testament that involved Nukumizu surely would be the occasion with Komari of dealing with the literature club, reaching towards the finale of the anime. Through the argument and misconception, the characters development and emotional stacking were perceptible during the scene of Nukumizu and Komari on the emergency stairs. Upon reaching that scene, my youth that has fallen asleep was exploded as I am certainly beholding one of the decent rom coms for this year. Episode 12 could arguably be my favourite.
The production team was crucial to the success of Makeine, but the voice actors also did an excellent job in bringing the characters to life, making them both lovely and likable. Not gonna lie, while Yanami has earned a lot of favoritism from fans, I’m actually more fond of Komari. Maybe I’ve unconsciously discovered a hidden interest there. Most of the voice cast are newcomers who’ve only recently made their debut, and I genuinely look forward to their future endeavors in the industry. Makeine has consistently delivered a fun story and rightfully ranks as one of the best anime this season. What else can I say? Bring on season 2!
