I was expecting to find the main character unlikable after seeing the bullying scene, but Shoya was a relatable character, and despite his past actions, you can't help but feel sympathy for him because he has changed. His struggles with anxiety, suicidal feelings, and distrust for others are what really made him likable and real. We witness his journey towards self-acceptance and healing, which adds layers to his character. His efforts to gain forgiveness from Shouko, the girl he once tormented, were also nice to see; it was an emotional rollercoaster where I would feel happy witnessing the progression of Shoya and Shouko's relationship, only to be met with sadness as they both deal with lingering feelings of their past.
The main characters were so well-developed that throughout the film, you would find yourself rooting for them, eagerly hoping for their redemption. However, the side characters weren't given the close to the same level of attention, and at times, they felt a bit random. Some of them contributed very little to the plot. It seemed that while Shoya and Shouko were on their paths to growth, the supporting cast remained static, lacking redeeming qualities that could have enriched the overall experience.
On a brighter note, the art was incredible, particularly during the firework scene, where the vibrant colors exploded across the night sky. The scene where they jumped into the water was equally breathtaking; the fluid animation captured the moment perfectly. Throughout the entire film, the animation was consistently beautiful.
The music also played a crucial role in conveying the film's emotional weight. The choice of piano was particularly effective, as it created a backdrop that amplified the characters' feelings, and truly enhancing the viewer's connection to Shoya and Shouko's journey and immersion in their relationship. The sound effects (?) Also added to the intensity of the scenes some an anxious, cautious scene others creating a calm and relaxed atmosphere.
Overall, I would highly recommend this film. It made me very emotional at multiple points even making my cry a couple times and I was expecting a sad ending but was pleasantly surprised. It tells a great story about redemption while handling heavy topics with sensitivity and grace. In my opinion, it truly brings out emotions, allowing you to empathize deeply with Shoya and Shouko. Their experiences show the complexities of human relationships and the importance of understanding and forgiveness. I often want to experience the first time i watched this film again because it was a great film.
