I didn't come to this show expecting much, before watching it I expected a mid to low 7, maybe high 6 romcom. Boy it's worse though.
Now I'm no romance expert but I already concluded this anime plot is bad after episode 2. The story was so bland and the type where I've seen it before. Not much on anime rather on C-D tier romance novel my parent like so much. Translating that, it's a generic romance between a bland with no real flaws and a girl which is an insert of the authors perfect woman.
Before you bash me for a nerd or whatever I actually don't mind much about the bad story. Story for me was less important than visual, music, presentation, etc. (Though if it bother/impress me it would still be considered for my rating), one thing I like is the fluff (as I'm a sucker for one) and in fact I think the non existent story here works for the fluff, and I think just the fluff is a valid reason for people to like this show.
I need to point the bad of the story because
holy shit the presentation on this show so bad and bare minimum that it actually offended me.
the animation was stiff and borderline clunky almost all of the time. Sometime there's inconsistent artstyle on some shot on certain episode with Mahiru and Amane. I'm sick of the lazy similar shots the studio used whenever Mahiru and Amane talk on the sofa.
The opening animation quality is better but still laughable
I guess the ending still pass because I've seen even lazier ones
and the ""special ending"" (episode 7 I think) is practically just an image
There's barely any music on this show which would've helped with my enjoyment and upped the presentation especially whenever again, when Mahiru and Amane talk on the sofa. Those scenes have a barely noticeable ambient or just dead silent.
and lastly, this is very nitpicky but even though I haven't seen the LN when watching but I could guess exactly what is skipped or what is just how it is in the LN.
Have the presentation been at least okay I would've given this show a low 7, maybe a 7.1.
Anyway I don't plan to read the LN but I did a quick skim of volume 1 to compare it to the anime and wow I'm honestly sad a fluffy novel get such a bad adaptation. I want to say go check the LN instead but I skim the first volume so I can't recommend either, though I still think the source material would be better.
Project no. 9 is definitely one of the anime studios out there, I don't think I would ever watch something from this studio ever again
TLDR: if you love fluff and don't mind the lack of any real plot then this is for you, that is if you can overlook the presentation so bad I think reading the LN is objectively better
