My incredibly jumbled-up thoughts on Space Runaway Ideon
I swear my ass was paying attention I swear!!
It was a slow burner to watch through, and that's at no major fault of the anime itself. While it did drag and have a somewhat repetitive story at times, the adventures the solo crew embarked on were enjoyable to watch. Even though I had a difficult time remembering each character's name (especially with how often these random buff clan goons die like holy), I still felt a pretty decent connection with some characters from the solo ship AND the buff clan's side. The standout character is most definitely my goat, Cosmos, who was carrying this crew to that finish line, whether they wanted to or not. Each episode thuroly based and kicked and threw that poor crew through the ringer on several occasions, hardly anything good happened, and when things did look u, it would crash and burn, he crew remained resilient, continuing to forge ahead despite the overwhelming challenges they faced.
Some gripes I have with the show are that there's honestly just so much fighting and flashing lights, it became a problem or pure nausea and repetitive pain, certain episodes genuinely hurt my eyes with the constant blinding lights. Another issue I have is that for a show with this many episodes, there wasn't a lot of characters don't get much character development, and when they do, the show doesn't elaborate too much, which isn't necessarily an issue, but it still left me feeling very indifferent about their past. Apart from Bes, the other characters don't get as much character building as he did from their pasts, but what we do get is serviable. I'm very hard to please, I guess, and the show doesn't need this kind of explanation since the characters themselves know their past is gone and they must push forward.
After at least a dozen or so episodes I slowly gained a pretty silly hatred towards the Buff Clan for every small thing but I really thought that the designs for the Buff clan mechs and ships are incredibly unique and a tad goofy at times, but still bring a menacing sense to them with how quickly they move around and attack in massive swarms, but they are an acquired taste due to their strange shapes, I feel like the use of color is outstanding though the animation quality had it’s dips throughout the show’s run I didn't care. (hell, I know I'll probably have a similar experience when I start watching someGundamm stuff soon) The Ideon is the clear champ in terms of design, so simple and boxy, yet its poses are still pretty cool and dynamic. Plus, he has a kickass beam sword and blackhole gun.
Looking forward to the movie Be Invoked shortly after completing the show.
