I've been wanting to write a review on this for awhile, but I haven't really been sure how to describe what I think towards it. Goodnight Punpun left me with a sort of empty feeling, as I got to read Punpun going through life, what all these difficulties and experiences made him as a person. Goodnight Punpun is one of the best mangas I've ever read, and I really, really like it.
The story follows Punpun throughout his life. We see him as a child, teenager, and an adult, everything he goes through through each age of his life makes up the person he is, and the manga does a really good job at showing how these experiences he's gone through influences his behavior. His thoughts are usually shown on simple black panels or through the man portrayed to be god, while his facial expressions aren't expressed most of the time. This leaves us to really see his inner self rather than the person he portrays himself to be on the outside. Goodnight Punpun really showcases Punpun extremely well as a character. I don't want to spoil anything, so I won't say too much regarding his life, but just know that I think it was done, really, really well. We're really able to watch Punpun become the person that he is. We see him find happy memories, someone that he really cares about, we can even see sweet parts to him, yet at the same time, we see his terrible actions, the bad parts to how he acts towards others, and his negative thoughts. We're able to see his emotions and why he acts the way he does, even if it's not in a positive light.
I think one of my favorite parts about this manga is the realism within it. It shows the happy moments within life but it also shows the extremely grim parts to it. From the beginning as seeing Punpun as a child, we see him go through struggles that a lot of people face, and we see how these change him as a person. This theme continues on throughout his life, as things become harder and harder for him, things seem to become much grimmer. This is also a part of the characters, as I feel a lot of these characters tend to be really realistic. They're well thought out, their backstories and experiences also making them as a person as well. The way they act feels real, and while it may not make them a great person, they're a well-written character.
I'm not exactly sure what to call this, but I had to bring this up. I really liked how Punpun wasn't shown and instead only his thoughts were. Along with this I liked how his intrusive thoughts were usually portrayed through God. Then throughout the manga, as he continues on through life, the bird that represents him becomes darker and darker, which could reflect his mental state. I just wanted to bring that up, because I really felt that it added something to this manga. There was just so much to this manga that wasn't directly said, but had a strong meaning to it.
The art is fantastic. The people look semi-realistic and really match that grim feeling that Goodnight Punpun has. The art sometimes could feel calm and othertimes could feel intimidating. The facial expressions are shown especially well, and when we do see Punpun's facial expressions it's in such an extreme way that it really puts an emphasis on what he's currently feeling and thinking. The backgroudns were also done really well, they had so much detail within them but they also made the characters stand out.
Overall, I think Goodnight Punpun is an emotional masterpiece. It's so well-written. It's emotional, insane and grim. The characters are portrayed so well, in a way they feel like real people, and so does the whole story. There's moments where I felt happy (though rare) reading this, felt disgusted and disturbed and especially, moments where I felt sad. It took me awhile to read through this manga because it was so much to take in, but I really am glad I read it. Goodnight Punpun is one of the best manga I've ever read.
