Sonny Boy is an abstract show while also being a metaphor for the classic "Coming of Age" story. In that premise lies both its strengths and its weaknesses.
Sonny Boy depicts adolescence as an unsure mystery hodgepodge of things happening and fading away. Some moments matter some dont, characters, locations, rules, concepts and ideas are introduced and discarded and forgotten about within 20 minutes. This all works to construct that idea of growing up being this unsure time of impermanence. And if it was going for that I think it does it very well. The show feels random and obscure, every episode passes and feels disconnected from the last. But at the same time I believe that is its flaw.
Adolescence is different for everyone. Some feel safe and stable, some the opposite and many dont know where they stand or what they feel. Sonny Boy in my opinion is one depiction of Adolescence. It is not THE depiction of adolescence.
To expand on that, I have been reading reviews of Sonny Boy for about the last 30 minutes after finishing the show. Ive tried to read some from as many perspectives as possible and what I have seen has been people understanding the show perfectly on the first watch, agreeing and relating to it on one side of the spectrum. And on the other side ive seen people who say this is too abstract, unrelatable and a disconnected take on growing up. I think this shows my point of Adolescence being different for everyone. People relate to this perfectly and others see it as not understandable at all and I think both of those takes are accurate and relevant.
When I watch a movie or TV show I find myself trying to see the appeal from all sides. I want to see the creators vision, I want to see the opinions of those who relate most and understand most and I want to see the perspective of those who relate least and understand least. (With that in mind I really struggle to give ratings because I dont know how I should rate something. Should it be how much I related? How well the story was told even if it meant nothing to me? I simply haven't decided yet and apologies for that discrepancy in my rating.) Maybe that is a good thing maybe its not I haven't figured that out for myself yet. But either way thats what brought me to formulate this review and I hope you found something in that.
While this might not relate to the story and way it is told as much i think it is important to bring up. This show having a lot of hand animated parts aswell as a perfect sound track in the final episodes really impressed me and improved the overall viewing experience.
Thank you for reading
