Kyoto Animation done did it again.
I love orchestras. I’m a choir kid myself, so while this particular part of music isn’t something I’m innately familiar with, it’s still something that makes me feel home. The concert scenes in here give me that same feeling, this warm feeling in my heart where I feel I can sit back, close my eyes and just… well, just feel content with life for a couple of minutes. That is, of course, not all this series has to offer, but it is one thing I want to emphasise. It’s why I love music anime.
I love the dialogue in this anime. The sibling relationship between Kumiko and Mamiko had some time to shine, but it never felt unnatural. Kumiko and Reina too, it felt real. Romantic or not (a can of worms I won’t be diving into right now), there is a very deep bond between the two, and you can feel that. I love when anime manages to do that. No over the top comedy, or voices so squeaky that I have to doubt if anyone actually talks like that, just 2 girls who share a very, very strong bond. And even when there’s more emotion, when the voice actors get to burst out in screams, tears, it never felt like it wasn’t real. I can love the scream fests too, I’m still a bit shounen fanboy, but I will always respect anime that go for a more natural approach, and do it well.
I love Kyoto Animation. While I remember season 1 for it looking absolutely gorgeous and sounding great, and while I do think season 2 wasn’t as ambitious as season 1, it’s still incredible. Everything had room to breathe, it still looked gorgeous, the performances (and really all of the music here) just blessed my ears, and it’s everything that I know and love KyoAni for.
I love anime. It’s by far my favourite medium in which to experience stories. Be it fun action shounen, depressive stories with hope being the main thing that drives everything forward, cute girls singing and dancing while having fun with each other, so much more, I love all of it. and Sound! Euphonium too, I love it. it’s beautiful, in every sense of the word. It ticks all the boxes I want it to tick for an anime like this. It’s an anime that probably could get a live action counterpart, and I believe it’d be a great series, but I don’t think it could be as good as in the medium of anime for me.
I love Sound! Euphonium. The reasons why, I have stated above. To summarise it, let me use the quote that this season ended with. Because while for the character it was about the song, to me it perfectly encapsulates why I love orchestra, hell, why I love music as a whole, and why I love this anime:
“’Sound! Euphonium.’ I’ll never forget the sense of warmth that name filled me with.”
Thanks for taking the time to read this.
