I am going to make this first part of my review my story on how I got into JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Christmas of 2023, I got a record player for Christmas with a bunch of vinyl's. One of the vinyl's however was in bad shape. So me and my dad went to Barnes and Noble to pick a replacement vinyl. However I was not looking in the vinyl section. I was in the manga section. I had always liked anime, I watched Soul Eater, a little bit of Naruto, little bit of My Hero Academia, and some others sprinkled in. But anime and manga was never a stand alone thing for me. However that year I met a lot of friends who loved anime and often times talks about JoJo's. I decided I might as well pick it up. So instead of getting the vinyl, I got volume 1 of part 6 of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. I thought at first that JJBA was an anthology series so I thought it didn't matter what order you went in. Luckily, I didn't know how to read manga. I got annoyed and decided to just watch the Anime. I had tried to 2 or 3 times in the past but I eventually gave up. Unlike other anime's, it didn't catch my interest. This time around though, it did. I binged the entire show in like 2 weeks. Though at first, the beginning was a hard stamp.
Time for the actually review of part 1. After rewatching JoJo's a few times I definitely appreciate Phantom Blood a bit more. Compared to the others however, it doesn't stand out. The main complaint I and everyone has is the power system. I really hate Hamon. It's boring and I just do not care about it. Also the characters are a little bland. Jonathan is a superman, hopeful type of good guy character and I like that trait however it's very simple here. I don't think any one really cares for Zeppeli and I liked Speedwagon though he wasn't very special. Dio Brando of course being the star of Phantom Blood. I probably would not be as into JoJo's as I am if it wasn't for Dio. Dio was the only main part of part 1 I enjoyed and the fact I knew he would come back in part 3 is what kept me going. In fact I almost dropped JoJo's in part 3 but pushed forward because I wanted to see DIO. The ending of part 3 is what made me appreciate JoJo's a lot more and is why I kept pushing forward. All of this to say that I would not be JoJo's fan if it wasn't for DIO.
Luckily part 1 is only a couple episodes. It isb't that good but you only have to bear it for a little bit and I think there is enough good in it to make everyone enjoy it a little. Especially the breath of fresh air that is Part 2, I don't think people should drop the idea of JJBA just because of this part. If anything to be honest it's not even the worst part in my opinion. I think all together part 3 is worse, though not by much. Part 1 gets better with time, the more you rewatch or think back to the series you appreciate the art of part 1 a lot more. Especially since Araki was able to make this not so good manga into a power house manga that everyone loves and everyone knows. He was able to create one of the best if not THE best power system in all of anime and create the second highest rated manga of all time. It all started from here. Part 1 may not be good, but you cannot under-appreciate it.
Part 1 definitely isn't good, is kind of a hassle to rewatch, and is hard to recommend. However it has parts that shine through that are really good and show what the future of JoJo's will bring and how good of series it is. If you can preserver through it, JoJo's will be one of the best Anime's you will watch.
