JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 1 is often labeled as the weakest or least interesting part of the series, but for me it will always be one of the most meaningful experiences I have had while watching anime, because it is the part that truly pulled me into JJBA and made me emotionally invested from the start. Going into it, I did not expect much, especially knowing that many fans consider it outdated or overshadowed by later arcs, yet Part 1 surprised me by how strongly it made me feel. Its story is simple and extremely dramatic, but that simplicity gives it a sense of sincerity that feels almost raw. There is no distraction from complicated power systems or constant humor, just a tragic story about pride, hatred, honor, and sacrifice. The dynamic between Jonathan Joestar and Dio Brando is what impacted me the most. Their relationship feels deeply personal, starting with bitterness and jealousy and slowly evolving into something cruel and devastating. Watching Jonathan remain kind, honorable, and selfless even when everything around him keeps falling apart made his character incredibly touching to me. His determination to do what is right, even when he gains nothing from it and loses everything instead, made his struggle feel painfully human. At the same time, Dio’s ambition, resentment, and complete lack of empathy made him terrifying in a grounded way. He does not just feel like a villain, but like someone whose hatred poisons everything he touches, which makes every encounter between him and Jonathan emotionally exhausting and intense. What truly stayed with me, though, was the tragic tone of Part 1. It never tries to soften its blows or avoid loss, and there is a constant feeling that no matter how hard Jonathan fights or how noble his intentions are, tragedy is unavoidable. That sense of inevitability made the sacrifices feel heavier and more meaningful, and it left me feeling genuinely sad in a way I did not expect from the beginning of a long running series. Even after finishing it, the emotions lingered, which is something I cannot say about many shows. While later parts of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure are undeniably more creative, complex, and refined, they would not have the same impact without the emotional foundation that Part 1 establishes. It introduces the ideas of legacy, fate, and sacrifice in a way that feels earned, making everything that follows feel connected to something larger and more meaningful. In the end, Part 1 is not special to me because it is flawless or exciting, but because it made me feel deeply and convinced me to continue the series. It is the reason I cared about JJBA at all, and no matter how much better the series becomes afterward, Part 1 will always hold a powerful and personal place for me as the beginning of that journey.
