I started reading Chainsaw Man three years ago, and while I still think Fire Punch hits harder, I was hooked. But that ending… wow. After Chainsaw Man eats the Death Devil, nobody can truly die anymore. This leads to chaos, especially with animals that reproduce quickly, which is why the locust devil Denji fought was so strong. Denji then tries to transform back into Chainsaw Man, but he forgets how. The story shifts to Pochita, who realizes Denji was actually happier in chapter 1, living in poverty, killing zombies, even though his life looked miserable. Despite gaining a “family” later, Denji lost them all; every woman he met tried to kill him, and he remained unsatisfied (symbolized by his constant desire for sex). Pochita makes the ultimate decision: he eats himself, erasing Chainsaw Man from existence. This rewrites the world so that he never existed. The final chapter loops back to chapter 1, but instead of Pochita saving Denji, it’s Power, fulfilling her promise from the end of Part 1. With Pochita gone, Makima never existed, and Denji ends up saving Asa from killing the Chicken Devil, preventing her from meeting the War Devil. So basically, all the chapters we read never happened. And honestly? That pissed me off.
I discovered Fujimoto through Fire Punch. I've read all of his other work, and what I like about him is that all of his manga can be summed up with two words: "weird shit". His stories are so confusing with so many ass pulls, deus ex machinas, and stuff, but I think that's part of the charm. I can turn off my brain and still enjoy reading the manga he wrote. I have been reading this manga ever since, and seeing that it has now ended really puts a tear in a man's face... except when you've actually read the last chapter. THAT CHAPTER MAY BE THE MOST CONFUSING SHIT I HAVE EVER SEEN. IT'S SO UNDERWHELMING, DOESN'T REALLY SOLVE ANY OF THE PLOTLINES IT STARTED, AND MAKES ME REALIZE THAT THE ENTIRE 2 TO 3 YEARS I HAVE SPENT WAITING FOR CHAPTER UPDATES TO READ THIS SHIT WAS WASTED. BUTTTT even though I have this reaction... 10/10 manga.
Why the polarizing reaction??? Well, it's just that I have read most of Fujimoto's work. I am aware of how he handles endings, so when I started reading the chapter and realized what was happening, I just started laughing so much because I knew that it would be the most shit/satisfying ending we could only get from Denji's life.
I guess what makes Chainsaw Man and how Fujimoto wrote it is that it accepts its illogicality. Everything collides with everything else, so all I could do was laugh at it. Does the ending make sense????? Of Coursesn't (I really hate that the ending is so underwhelming, but IT JUST MAKES SENSE, WHICH MAKES ME HATE IT MORE). Is it confusing AF????? IT ISSSS. Do I still love this manga and all of its weirdness????? FUCK YESSS HAHHAHAHHAHAHHAHHA
