Konosuba is a series that I started in hopes of finding something funny, that I would be able to enjoy, while also getting to see a nice cast of characters, and a tiny bit of story on top of it, but not too much, only enough to make me think I’m watching something that requires some intelligence. It went to deliver this really nicely, and I felt that in a time in which I needed it, this show provided exactly what I wanted.

This series begins with a shut in NEET, Kazuma, getting run over. I feel like they didn’t really care much for Kazuma’s actual death, it was pretty abrupt, but also quite funny. Since his death was so pitiful, the Goddess, Aqua laughed at him. Their dynamic together is pretty funny, since it began with Aqua mocking Kazuma, then she gets chosen and has to go to the Iseki world with Kazuma. Her total airhead reaction to thinks is what cracks me up, the total breakdown she has while Kazuma just laughts makes this all really good.

.Aqua also being a goddess with no godly powers and low intelligence was an amazing setup for a bit of comic relief. They get straight to work, and have to loads of manual labour, shown in one big sequence. By the end of the episode, they had already gotten to know each other, and even had a sentimental chat at the end of this first episode. Despite all this manual labour, Aqua was still really lazy and slept in a stable as if it were a king sized bed. Aqua being completely useless is really funny too, since she gets covered in frog slime, while Kazuma has to save her.

.The introduction of Megumin was way over the top, this is my favourite thing about her, all of the over the top things she does, even the eyepatch, which is just there to look cool. When they went out on a quest with the new party member, Megumin, Aqua randomly had a scene were the animation looked really cool and over the top, her “God Requiem” ended in nothing though, since she was eaten by a frog yet again. And after seeing this, we immediately get shown Megumin’s explosion magic too! I need to stress how this probably is one of my favourite bits about Konosuba, the animation of her explosion magic is super over the top, and ridiculous every time it is used, on top of this, Megumin can’t even move after using it, so it lacks a proper use. Megumin and Aqua now both being in the situation where Kazuma had to save them from being eaten by frogs, they were covered in slime. This really makes it seem like he’s just got two completely useless party members, which really turns out to be a slight bit of the case.

.For the final member of the party, Darkness, the Crusader came and found Kazuma, although Kazuma’s intuition led to her rejection. He learned his first ability shortly after too, leading to the infamous scene, of him using his steal skill, to steal the girls’ pants. In a comedic scene, this actually shows that Kazuma, is just a bit of a pervert. We see him do heinous actions like this throughout the series too. I think the explanation that Darkness gave of this situation was hilarious too. Kazuma really went from “Adventurer” to “pervert” like Megumin said. The emergency quest was quite fun too, it was flying cabbages, which was super low stakes, and yet somehow, Darkness couldn’t hit a single one. This emphasises how completely useless his party is. To defeat this cabbage army, Megumin used her magic, I was very happy about this. What made me more happy was the next episode, which focused more on Megumin, and her explosion magic in particular, being used on a random castle. This marked the beginning of Kazuma and Megumin going out to use explosion magic as a part of their daily routine, since Megumin couldn’t walk home after using it.

.The first dangerous looking enemy arrived due to all of Megumin’s explosions too, this guy looked really scary, but Megumin bravely went up to him. This kind of went to show that the villains in this show wouldn’t be that dangerous, and would also follow the comedy aspect of this show. Even the death sentence, which was meant to set up a plot for Kazuma’s party to raid this villain’s castle, however, it was hilarious that Aqua could just reverse this spell, and they wouldn’t have to do a quest at all.
Kazuma seems to get more fed up with Aqua by the day at this point, she keeps on picking the hardest quests, and won’t do the easiest ones alone. Seeing her in the cage getting chucked about was a nice way to mess with Aqua, the party seemed like they were content with having her doing all the work too. This led to the introduction of Mitsurugi, the typical Isekai hero who actually received a good cheat weapon from Aqua. This led to one of my favourite scenes in this whole season, the hero sees Aqua and tries to free her. Aqua forgot who he was though, the first laugh, and his reaction to seeing how Aqua had been brought to the Isekai world was really good too. The girls rejecting Mitsurugi was really funny too, and so seeing that he challenged him to a duel, this scene was absolutely hilarious. Kazuma rushed in immediately, and stole his cheat weapon, no warning, just pure comedy. Seeing that Kazuma sold the sword was really the cherry on top too, this “hero” had been completely rinsed by Kazuma, the image of a scum in the Isekai world. The setup from last episode came into play at the end here, the villain Dullahan wanted them to go to his castle, but since Darkness had been saved by Aqua, there was no need to. This first big fight allowed each member of the party to have their own moment, Megumin’s amazing explosion magic, Darkness’ sword duel, in which she throws him off completely by suggesting that the Dullahan takes advantage of those he defeats. Even Kazuma uses a water spell on the Dullahan and finally Aqua has a cool little animation for creating a flood, which put them in loads of debt, before Kazuma turned the big villain into a football.
To pay off the debt, Kazuma had to look at the possible quests, although he knew what none of these things were. Kazuma actually died this episode, which was quite a surprise, I found it pretty amusing that he cared for Eris way more than he did for Aqua, seeing as that Aqua is always slandering Eris. I do love Aqua’s new pet snow spirit too. I’m beginning to feel pretty bad for Aqua at this point, she ends up crying every episode because of Kazuma. I thought that the dolls in the mansion they were staying at were pretty funny, and on top of this, the potty humour which came from Kazuma needing to use the toilet added to this scene.

.Kazuma keeps on making friends offscreen, these friends are a pretty bad influence too. He goes from questing, to going to get some erotic dreams from a succubus. The women in this place were ever so slightly clothed, and the angles from above Kazuma’s head was a bit overwhelming for him. This all went to setup his relationship with Darkness getting tarnished. He went back from this straight to eating crab with his party, surprised he didn’t feel more guilty about this. That crab did look great though. It was so obvious that Kazuma wasn’t dreaming, he didn’t realise this though, but we all knew it while watching. Aqua managed to save the day here by countering Kazuma’s degenerate fantasies too.
The finale to this season was fantastic. It encompassed all of my favourite parts of this show all in one episode. We saw Aqua and Megumin using some insane magic, while Darkness stood there, just looking badass. I loved the use of the intro in this scene too. I think reading about the dead guy was pretty funny too, since it seemed like a scene that would be really serious, but it was just some really stupid guy. They ended up using a big explosion again, since Kazuma could use drain touch, to let Megumin use her magic again, I think this is something he should do more, since I love seeing her use her magic. The next season is set up with Kazuma getting arrested, leaving on a cliffhanger.

.Overall, this first season was filled with some great laughs, a bit of a layered story, but not one that’s in depth at all, allowing for lots of fun to be had with a really good cast of characters. I enjoyed this first season and thought it was a really sweet way of introducing this funny Isekai world.
