Romantic comedies always been a guilty pleasure for me, I can't get enough of them. Problem is when you see one, you pretty much seen them all, love is hard for an otaku breaks this saying. Instead of focusing on a couple getting together, we start at the halfway point. The main couple starts being a thing in the very beginning. This is where the story starts, you get to see two otaku and their coworkers learn how to be together, the good ol' awkward yet sweet love. What makes this show so fun to watch is despite being childhood friends, they don't know how to read each other's body language or subtle hints. So a lot of the comedy comes from misunderstandings, that could be solved if they just communicated properly. It's a refreshing take on love, I like how we see two sides of the same coin when it comes to romance. We got on one hand a couple who understand each other and try to make progress at their own pace and a couple who get each other but spend most of their time arguing or worrying about everything else but themselves.
Good news is it actually works because the whole point of the show is love isn't easy especially when you have a time consuming hobby like being an otaku. Otaku are supposed to be socially awkward and bad at picking up at things like body language. Each and every week, I was excited for whatever was going to happen next even if no real development happened. Which was weird because I normally hate anime depicting relationships just to tease me every five minutes. It worked well for the setting because going from co workers or friends to lovers must be a weird transition. You gotta learn how to deal with the other person's quirks and habits, sometimes you don't even know what to do or say. Just like in real life, it's easy to think things through in your own head. So when a date or bar scene goes awry, you can't vent or force change onto someone to feel more comfortable. Relationships especially romantic ones require WORK and patience, an theme apparent in every episode.
The opening and voice acting sold me on this show, everything complimented each other. Even the ending song gave you a better idea of why the characters act the way they do.We aren't following a stereotypical couple and their friends, we are seeing a bird's eye view into what otaku most likely go through on a daily basis. The awkward greetings, pet names, picking gifts, learning how to get used to each other and the dreaded secrets you stumble upon.
